    Job Summary: The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for RWJ University Hospital will execute and drive the hospital s strategic and operational plan, ensuring alignment with enterprise objectives, while also addressing local community population and patient needs. The COO is accountable for the efficient and fiscally responsible operation of RWJUH and will work with other hospital and system senior leaders to ensure a high level of productivity, consumer access, patient retention, quality, and service.

    RWJBarnabas Health is undergoing unprecedented growth and an evolution into a fully integrated system. The COO must be a fast learner, thrive in dynamic organizations, and bring innovation and the highest expectations. In addition, the COO will be a results-oriented individual who can achieve success in a highly matrixed environment. The COO will be comfortable collaborating with physicians and executives and will possess outstanding communication and influencing skills.

    Reports to:

    The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for RWJ University Hospital will report directly to the hospital president.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Achieve the highest level of performance in RWJUH operating units. Establishes, monitors and manages a plan to ensure productivity, operational and financial performance, and patient through put.
    • Develop strategic initiatives necessary to integrate and expand services and population health initiatives, as well as potential new services to meet the growing healthcare needs of RWJUH communities.
    • Enhance the quality, access, safety, and efficiency of patient services and increase patient satisfaction with a focus on performance excellence and high reliability. Leverage the EPIC EHR platform to hardwire best practices and measure results and improvements.
    • Facilitate collaboration and work effectively with system senior leadership, department chairs, colleagues, and clinicians at both RWJBH and Rutgers, including Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School, to achieve hospital, network and system goals around clinical practice, safety, value-based initiatives, research, and medical education.
    • Foster robust, meaningful, and mutually beneficial relationships with physician members of RWJUH. This includes helping to recruit and retain high-quality physicians.
    • Serve as a crucial executive champion for system value-based strategic initiatives, including population health, clinical integration, and value-based outcomes.
    • Design organizational services collaboratively with community leaders and organizations appropriate to the scope and level of care required by the patients served. Develop and participate in systematic and effective mechanisms for fostering communication among individuals and groups within the organization and the community. Ensure that the services which are designed are responsive to the needs and expectations of patients and/or their families/decision makers.
    • Optimize operations, finances, and customer service levels of RWJUH; develop and execute long range, strategic, operational and space use plans for the organization; and measure success through key performance metrics, including productivity and quality.
    • Ensure close management of revenue cycle, including billing services, ensuring appropriateness and timeliness of reimbursement, maintenance of policies and procedures related to professional fees, billing practices, and data standards; monitor performance of internal billing processes.
    • Demonstrate market agility in analyzing and evaluating opportunities for capital expansion.
    • In partnership with human resources, recruit, develop, and retain the best talent that drives employee engagement and fosters a culture of collaboration, satisfaction and enthusiasm with commitment to top-of-license, team-based care.
    • In partnership with marketing, continue to further brand RWJUH in the surrounding community.

    Job Requirements:

    • Master s degree required. Degree in health services (D.P.H., M.P.H., or M.H.A.), business administration (M.B.A.), or medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) strongly preferred.
    • Seven to ten years of significant career progression within healthcare operations/management, culminating in a senior management position ideally as a Chief Operating Officer, Senior Operations Officer or Chief Executive Officer.
    • Demonstrated experience and success delivering excellent service, operational and quality outcomes within an acute-care hospital setting and matrixed environment
    • Strong business insight, a sophisticated knowledge of healthcare funding, and experience in competitive marketplaces with the ability to make complex and difficult decisions.
    • Highly developed communication, influencing, and negotiation skills, particularly with physicians and executives
    • Skill using and analyzing information systems to quickly recommend opportunities for optimization and efficiency
    • A record of recruiting, training, and mentoring employees. A reputation for sustained, inclusive, trust-based physician relations through understanding of physician viewpoints and needs
