Being a Chief of Staff acts as a point of contact or gatekeeper between top management and other stakeholders. Provides oversight and guidance to projects of high importance. Additionally, Chief of Staff may act as an advisor to the chief executive. May be responsible for the management of executive support staff. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to CEO or executive. The Chief of Staff manages a departmental function within a broader corporate function. Develops major goals to support broad functional objectives. Approves policies developed within various sub-functions and departments. Comprehensive knowledge of the overall departmental function.     The Chief of Staff supports the Sheriff of Lake County by managing projects, resolving issues, and ensuring that expectations and deadlines are communicated clearly to staff. They serve as a strategic planner, advisor, and decision-maker for the Sheriff and act as an executive liaison with the Lake County Board. The Chief of Staff also works with subcommittees to provide ongoing support for the Board.
    • Represents the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff at public events and in various capacities with government (municipal, county board, and state legislature) and community organizations.
    • Provides operational assistance by managing special projects and leading key initiatives.
    • Ensures that issues needing the Sheriff’s attention are addressed in a timely manner. 
    • Facilitates communication with all stakeholders; and ensures that the Sheriff’s Office is responsive to the needs of the Sheriff, Command Staff, rank and file and community, with attention to supporting the Sheriff’s priorities, community relations, and equity.
    • Oversees and drives Community Relations and Public Information strategies to increase public awareness, engage communities across the county, and strengthen existing relationships between LCSO and communities, government agencies, and organizations.
    • Assists with efforts in researching available law enforcement grants and other funding streams for various projects.
    • Conducts reviews of proposed legislative actions to determine the potential impact on the organization.
    • Facilitates effective communication with the Board’s leadership team and with individual Board members by preparing/contributing to reports, briefings, presentations and responses on Board goals and specific requests.  
    • Able to manage projects with attention to detail by demonstrating strong organizational skills, ability to balance the big picture with detailed steps to reach the end goal, and ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines.
    • Actively listens to others, builds consensus and resolves conflicts.
    • Skillfully navigates existing governmental structures/systems.
    • Motivates, inspires and moves others into action to achieve assigned goals.
    • Builds and maintains strong relationships.
    • Works successfully alone or on a team.
    • Coaches, coordinates, and leads teams.
    • Establishes clear expectations, deliverables and deadlines.
    • Able to set clear agendas and facilitate effective meetings.
    • Organizes and prioritizes critical issues and required information for the executive to facilitate efficient decision making.
    • Acts as a point of contact or gatekeeper between executive command and other external stakeholders.
    • Provides oversight and guidance to projects of high importance as assigned by the Sheriff.
    Education and/or Other Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in criminal justice administration, law enforcement, business, communications or something related.
    • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in criminal justice administration or law enforcement. Must have some knowledge of federal, state and local laws.
    Physical Requirements
    • Requires light to medium work involving standing or walking for extended periods.
    • Exerting up to 30 pounds of force on a regular basis.
    • Moderate dexterity in operating machinery, tools, or office equipment.
    • Frequently required to travel throughout Lake County via automobile.
    • Frequently required to walk, sit and talk or hear for extended periods.
    • Frequently required to travel throughout Lake County via automobile.
