    Position Description

    Penn Medicine is seeking a Division Chief of Podiatric Surgery (POD). The Division Chief will provide all aspects of clinical, operational and teaching leadership; including quality improvement initiatives, patient progression & program development, and will work collaboratively with various Hospital and Health-system stakeholders. The Division Chief reports to Hospital Administration, and also has a reporting relationship with the Chief of the Department of Surgery and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

    The active clinical practice in which the Division Chief will participate is Penn Podiatry and is based at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC), with practice locations in West Philadelphia, South Jersey, and Radnor. The practice currently includes eight employed podiatric physicians who treat an array of medical and surgical patients. The podiatric team works closely with other specialists at Penn Medicine, as well as other departments within the hospital, including vascular surgery, neurology, and plastic surgery.

    Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is home to a four-year Podiatric Surgery Residency Program, as well as a two-year, patient-oriented Clinical Research Fellowship in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. The Division Chief will oversee the residency Program Director in all aspects of the residency and fellowship programs, including, but not limited to, the selection, training, education and discipline of trainees. The Division Chief will be responsible for overseeing program accreditation and program improvements.

    Responsibilities of the Chief of the Division of Podiatric Surgery include the following:

    1. Clinical Practice: The Division Chief will have a robust clinical practice for approximately 70% effort.

    2. Provide direct oversight of all Podiatric services: In leading the PPMC Podiatric Surgery service (POD), the Division Chief will have the responsibility for recruiting staff members, developing and implementing work that focuses on high quality care, driving physician productivity with quality, efficiency & fiscally responsible outcomes, oversight of divisional research, and manage inpatient progression.

    3. Quality and Safety Oversight: Works with PPMC CMO, Chief of the Department of Surgery, and Hospital and Health System Leadership to ensure PPMC POD alignment with hospital and health system quality and safety goals.

    4. Manage POD Patient Progression: Represent the PPMC POD in patient progression initiatives, partnering with hospital leadership, the Chief of the Department of Surgery, and the PPMC CMO to develop, monitor and drive metrics relevant to patient progression.

    5. Interdepartmental Responsibilities: The Division Chief will be charged with relationship building among specialties, problem-solving, policymaking, review of operating room block-time scheduling, review of wound care clinic schedules and review of POD clinic schedules.

    6. Liaison Officer Duties: At the direction of PPMC Leadership, the Division Chief will perform liaison duties to ensure an open and frank dialogue with various organizations including, but not limited to: the Philadelphia County Podiatric Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association, the American Podiatric Medical Association, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

    Position requirements:

    • Candidate must be Board Certified by the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery
    • Candidate must have completed a Podiatric Surgical Residency recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education
    • Candidate must be a Surgical Podiatrist with a minimum of 5 years in practice. The candidate should have significant experience in foot and ankle reconstructive and traumatological surgery.

    • Candidate must possess a high level of interpersonal skills to allow effective communications with a wide variety of hospital personnel and physicians and the general public.
