  • Job Summary:

    The chief estimator is responsible for overseeing the estimation process of construction projects from inception to completion. They analyze project plans, specifications, and other relevant documents to accurately determine project costs, prepare detailed estimates, and provide guidance to the estimating team. The chief estimator works closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure accurate and competitive bidding.

     

    Responsibilities:

    1. Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand project scope, requirements, and objectives.
    2. Conduct thorough quantity takeoffs and cost analysis for all project components, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
    3. Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to identify value engineering opportunities and alternative construction methods to optimize project costs.
    4. Prepare accurate and comprehensive estimates, including detailed breakdowns of costs, labor hours, material quantities, and subcontractor bids.
    5. Identify and evaluate potential risks and uncertainties that may affect project costs and timelines.
    6. Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing for materials, equipment, and services.
    7. Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations as required.
    8. Develop and maintain a database of historical cost data, industry trends, and benchmarking information to support the estimation process.
    9. Train, mentor, and provide guidance to the estimating team members.
    10. Collaborate with other departments, such as procurement and finance, to ensure accurate budgeting and cost tracking throughout the project lifecycle.
    11. Stay updated with industry best practices, new technologies, and market trends related to construction estimating.
    12. Assist in the negotiation of contracts and subcontracts to ensure favorable terms and conditions for the company.
    13. Participate in post-bid analysis and project review meetings to evaluate the accuracy of estimates and identify areas for improvement.

     

    Requirements:

    1. Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
    2. Proven experience as an estimator in the construction industry, with at least 8-10 years of progressive experience.
    3. Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building codes.
    4. Proficient in using construction estimating software and tools.
    5. Excellent analytical and mathematical skills with a keen attention to detail.
    6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams, clients, and subcontractors.
    7. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
    8. Leadership and team management skills to supervise and motivate the estimating team.
    9. Familiarity with contract administration and legal aspects of construction projects.
    10. Professional certifications, such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or Certified Construction Estimator (CCE), are desirable but not mandatory.
