Job Qualifications
Education
Have a high school diploma and be at least 21 years of age.
Have a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field with 6 credits equivalent to early childhood education or an
Associate Degree with 24 credits including administration. A combination of experience will be considered.
Experience
2-3 years of work or volunteer experience providing child care as a lead child care teacher or assistant director in a licensed child care or be certified by the Wisconsin department of public instruction in early childhood education or show evidence of meeting the qualifications for such certification.
Basic Skills
● Must be proficient in reading writing and math skills
● Must have moderate computer skills
● Must display maturity, good judgment, interpersonal skills and be able to relate sensitively to children, and adults.
● Must display leadership and communication qualities.
● Must demonstrate skill in organization and time management.
Position Specifications
● Complete a minimum of 4 hours of orientation within the first week of employment.
● Have a health examination within 6 months prior to or within 30 days after beginning work.
● Within one year after assuming the position, and within each subsequent year, complete 25 additional hours of training in early childhood education as approved by the State.
The Program Director’s job duties include, but are not limited to:
Duties and Responsibilities
● Have working knowledge of implement and comply with all the latest
State, Federal and Wausau Child Care, Inc. Board policies and regulations.
● Under the supervision of the Executive Director, perform all duties necessary to comply with State Licensing Rules and meet NAEYC accreditation standards.
● Participate as requested in the formulation of agency policies and procedures.
● Be aware of, and report severe illness, accidents, or issues of concern relating to the staff, or children to Supervisor. Report any action taken regarding these incidents.
● Supervise the dispensing of children’s medications according to State regulations.
● Be responsible for child’s enrollment and ongoing services to families, insuring that parents are aware of agency policies, procedures, regulations and fee schedule. Insure that children are appropriately integrated into the program.
● Arrange parent meetings.
● Provide for the needs of the individual child’s pace of learning, physical or emotional needs, and cultural background.
● Implement the curriculum compatible with Wausau Child Care goals and philosophy that is developmentally appropriate according to
NAEYC standards.
● Abide by the NAEYC Code of ethics.
● Coordinate program schedules, including curriculum preparation, implementation, and evaluation of activities with children.
● Keep children’s files up to date.
● Under the direction of the supervisor, interview staff and volunteers to work in the program. Provide the required orientation and training of these individuals before they work with the children.
● Supervise and evaluate program staff and volunteers, complying with all affirmative action and labor regulations.
● Dismiss staff when deemed appropriate or necessary.
● Schedule both regular and substitute staff hours and assigns staff to specific duties and responsibilities to maintain compliance with regulations and policy.
● Monitor and maintain accurate Staff Sign In/Out Time Reports for payroll, complying with all Federal and State laws.
● Submit purchase orders or requisitions to main office as needed for program supplies and materials.
● Maintain adequate records and reports related to children, staff and program operation.
● Assist with agency marketing plan implementation.
Interpersonal Relations
● Maintain open communication with Administration in relating needs of children, staff and building.
● Work cooperatively with other agency services, programs and personnel.
● Insure that all privileged information about children, parents, staff, and
Wausau Child Care matters is kept confidential.
Decision Making
● Meet program needs with policy, budget, and regulation.
● Manage stressful situations with composure and control.
● Demonstrate common sense and responsibility in making decisions which affect children, staff and facility.
● Conduct staff meetings; provide for in service training.
● Review medical log as required and take action to correct errors or identified concerns.
● Do scheduling of children and staff.
● Provide monthly report to supervisor regarding complaints; activity, actions and decisions made.
Client and Public Relations
● Represent Wausau Child Care, Inc. in a positive manner, on our premises, on field trips, and at work related events in the community.
● Write correspondence as appropriate.
● Conduct Center tours and explain program to visitors.
● Greet parents and children.
● Have direct telephone communication.
● Interview parents enrolling their children, giving a tour and explanation of program and forms, and seeing that all enrollment data is correct.
● Be able to discuss the child with parents in a positive manner and give any helpful suggestions if possible.
Leadership
● Attend Administrative and professional meetings or workshops when possible, or required.
● Supervise the recording of daily attendance and activities for children.
● Set example of quality child care and good work habits for other staff to follow.
● Maintain professional appearance and attitude, providing an example for other staff to follow.
● Conduct staff meetings, assist in planning and conducting staff orientation and in service.
● Work in cooperation with, able to be willing to share ideas with other teachers and staff to develop a good working unit within the program.
● Help each member of the staff develop his/her potential.
● Insure that the program reflects and staff has knowledge to carry out developmentally appropriate practices.
Safety
● Trained in CPR/AED and Pediatric First Aide and be able to recognize signs of communicable disease or other common illness.
● Maintain an orderly, safe, and attractive physical environment for children and staff.
● Review and practice emergency drill procedures with staff on a regular basis.
● Maintain first aid kits and safety equipment.
● Check alarms weekly.
Funds and Property
● Monitor accounts
● Collect Center fees on a timely basis and bring to office.
● Manage Center budget at or above the break even level.
● Maintain program operations; meet program needs within budget guidelines.
● Monitor staffing ratios, group size and enrollment to insure revenue and expense controls.
Working Conditions
● Maintain flexibility in managing changes in schedule and work responsibilities.
A Program Director shall work under the direct supervision of the Executive
Director. He/She shall be responsible for insuring quality management of the assigned program by fulfilling the position responsibilities as outlines above, or other duties as may be requested or assigned. The Program Director must be physically able to do this job on a consistent basis.
