Child Life Specialist is responsible for the design and implementation of pediatric programs, therapies, and activities among young patients. Works with families to assist in caring for childhood hospitalizations or disabilities. Being a Child Life Specialist monitors child development to ensure normal progression. Provides in-depth care as needed to more urgent cases. Additionally, Child Life Specialist may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. To be a Child Life Specialist typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Work is closely managed. This position will manage projects, assist with strategic initiatives, and operating system, network, application software and devices (including computers, standard office equipment, telephone system equipment and mobile phones).
Skills/Experience Required: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others with a compassionate approach to customer service. Must have specialized computer skills and ability to learn new ones. Ability to manage projects with deadlines and execute changes in a collaborative manner. Must have experience with operating systems, computer hardware, and network systems. Ability to provide technical training to end-users in the agency. Must be patient and sympathetic, and will often be required to help staff who may be frustrated with equipment they are trying to use. Requires excellent listening skills, with the ability to understand problems being described and know when to ask questions to clarify situations. Ability to process information and analyze data, abilities in deductive reasoning and oral and written expression; Ability to explain technical subjects to staff without technical expertise.
Work Conditions/Physical Requirements: Primarily works in an office environment, using computers on a daily basis, but may assist field staff, so will be outdoors or at other work locations as required. May sit for extended periods. May at times work on call and outside normal hours to respond to staff needs. Ability to walk, stand, push, pull, bend and lift up to 50 lbs.; must be able to read printed materials and a computer screen and communicate in person and over the telephone.
