Provides in-depth care as needed to more urgent cases. Additionally, Child Life Specialist may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. To be a Child Life Specialist typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Work is closely managed. The Child Life Specialist provides for the developmental needs of hospitalized children age 0-18 to include advocating for psychosocial, emotional, physical and cognitive needs. Decreases the anxiety and/or trauma with illness and hospitalization through interventions, which promote play, learning, mastery, self-expression, and peer interaction. Educates staff and the community concerning the developmental needs of hospitalized children, reactions of children to illness and hospitalization, and family centered care. Advocates for policy and standards of care which support the special needs of children and families. Provides child life services in the Emergency Room, Pediatric ICU, Pediatric Unit, Radiology, Day Surgery, and NICU.
1. Under the supervision of the Pediatric Director of Rehabilitation, the CCLS is responsible for planning, organizing and conducting Child Life programs for inpatient infants, children and their families designed to support the developmental progression of the individual infant, child and family during hospitalization.
2. Participates in establishing, maintaining, and improving patient’s health care goals through patient assessment, planning and implementation of child life interventions and evaluation of patient outcomes.
3. Fulfills the duty and responsibility to maintain competence and to continue personal and professional growth.
4. Observes patient safety, risk management and infection control policies and procedures.
5. Educates patients in terms they understand and within their paradigm to maximize their ability to comply with their discharge instructions.
6. Identifies and assists with opportunities for performance improvement activities on the unit and with other service areas.
7. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by taking ownership of time management, decreasing waste (of time and supplies) and promoting cost effectiveness while maintaining patient safety and quality of care. To actively market services to increase volume and awareness.
8. Demonstrates the ability to be an advocate for and strive to protect the health, safety and rights of the patient.
9. Interactions with patients and colleagues demonstrate compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status or cultural beliefs.
10. Communicate effectively with other care providers (physicians, nurses, business office, and medical records) to provide for continuity of patient care and to meet the needs of the customers we serve.
11. Demonstrates ability to fulfill requirements of attendance, punctuality, and timekeeping practices.
12. Behaviors and interactions demonstrate a positive attitude, personal initiative and motivation to achieve the goals of the unit.
13. To uphold the standards of the profession and organization and practice ethically and with integrity.

Education:
Bachelor degree in Child Life, Child Development, Family Studies or related field required and 600 hour internship with an approved child life program
Experience:
Previous experience preferred with basic understanding of children’s illnesses, medical terminology and supervisory skills.
Special Qualifications:
Ability to communicate and interact with pediatric and adolescent population and their families. Proficient in knowledge of growth and development of the pediatric population
