    The Childbirth Educator is a non-clinical professional and cannot offer medical advice, diagnose medical conditions, or perform clinical procedures/treatments of any kind, does not prescribe or administer any medication including over-the-counter medication, and cannot advise families to act against medical advice.

     

    Will provide culturally sensitive and age-appropriate education:

    • Provides instruction and education to clients, parents, and community
    • Collaborates with the maternal child health team
    • Provides information about the physiology, psychology, and sociology of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and early parenthood
    • Demonstrates skills to assist women and their support persons to cope with pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and early parenthood
    • Encourages communication between the pregnant woman and other members of her health care circle team
    • Provides information to expectant parents about the labor process and the options they have for birthing plans
    • Help women access accurate and up to date information about childbirth and make informed decisions about their care
    • Design and lead classes on pregnancy, parenthood, and general health care, especially post-birth care, including but not limited to CUNA and Body and Soul Prenatal Health Education and Support Groups; Comenzando Bien, Becoming a Mom, Infant Car Safety, Infant Massage, Lactation, and others, Expectant Parent Orientation Sessions, Baby Care Basics, Infant/Baby CPR,
    • Works in collaboration with local hospitals or medical facilities, teach classes, and offer courses in a community setting
    • Must stay current with medical and technological trends related to childbirth to ensure they are giving the most accurate information available

    Must be bilingual in English/Spanish with written and verbal fluency and master comprehension of the Spanish language. Experienced working with Central and South American families, African American, African Diaspora and Caribbean families required.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Serves as a an advocate for the development of a maternal child health care system that provides access for parents to safe, low-cost, and family centered maternity care both within and outside the hospitals
    • Coordinate and facilitate hospital orientation tours
    • Help families understand their rights according to current healthcare policy and legal statutes
    • Promotes mother-baby, and family-centered maternity care as well as breastfeeding and parent infant bonding for all pregnant women and their family members, regardless of risk status
    • Supports the right of the pregnant woman to make informed decisions based on knowledge of benefits, risks, and alternatives
    • Supports the right of the pregnant woman to be accompanied by a person or persons of her choice throughout prenatal visits, labor and birth, and the postpartum period
    • Supports community-based doula efforts within the hospital setting, establishes connections to support a perinatal community integration model
    • Supports a maternity care system that does not discriminate in services or alternatives based on race, color, culture, age, language, marital status, or method of payment

    Qualifications

    Education:

    Preferred Candidates will hold a Certified Childbirth Educator (CCCE) – CAPPA, DONA, ICCE, LAMAZE or any other designation, Registered Nurse or LNP license in New Jersey and experience as a Community Based Doula preferred.

     

    Experience:

    At least 3-5 years of experience working with pregnant and parenting individuals required. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Proficient in presentation skills, knowledge of adult learning techniques, and good group dynamics. Experience working in hospitals, maternity programs, birth center facilities a plus.
