Civil Engineer designs and supervises construction projects such as airports, bridges, channels, dams, railroads, or roads. Reviews designs, tests and assesses materials, and performs necessary data collection and calculations in areas such as traffic forecasting, soil capacity, groundwater analysis, and structure design. Being a Civil Engineer responsibilities also include estimating costs, estimating personnel and material needs, preparing proposals, and establishing completion dates. May also assist in inspecting aging infrastructure or overseeing improvement projects. Additionally, Civil Engineer requires a bachelor's degree in engineering. May require a Professional Engineer License (PE). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Civil Engineer work is closely managed.     This position provides engineering project leadership and/or discipline support for various projects by researching, specifying, developing, designing, engineering, or testing components, equipment and/or systems.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Researches and analyzes data such as client design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
    • Works with clients to develop a project’s scope of work, estimates, and/or schedules.
    • Reviews and approves project drawings, standards, and specifications.
    • Develops major equipment and material selection, and construction specifications.
    • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.
    • Ensures that all assigned activities and operations comply with applicable codes, regulations, and laws.
    • Provides support during fabrication and installation phases to ensure engineering documents are followed.
    • Coordinates activities with other project disciplines involved in fabrication, operation, application, and installation or repair of various materials, products, or systems.
    • Provides technical direction, support and information to other engineers, designers, and drafters.
    • Consistently demonstrates professional skills in structuring assigned activities, creativity, teamwork, communications, operational efficiencies, handling of a client’s changing needs, decision making, and analyzing and solving problems.
    • Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design project.
    • Calculates cost and determines feasibility of project based on analysis of collected data.
    • Prepares or directs preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules and designs for project.
    • Inspects construction site to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction and safety standards.
    • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
    • More senior individuals will have engineering experience including arctic civil/structural design and application of IBC, AWS, ASCE, AISC and national fire codes.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution required.
    • Related experience preferred
    • Prefer a candidate that has obtained their Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) status.
    • Civil PE preferred.
    • North Slope, Arctic, Canadian, Cold Regions, Offshore Structures, Telecom Infrastructures, Fire Protection, Arctic Foundations, and/or Petroleum Industry project experience is preferred but not required.

    Language Ability

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of managers, client, or employees of organization.

    Math Ability

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form.

    Computer Skills

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must have experience working with Advanced Steel, and should be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and the most recent version of AutoCAD design software.

    Certificates and Licenses

    No certifications required.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities, although the individual may be asked to lead a functional work group or direct the work functions of others including drafters, designers.
