Civil Engineering Supervisor jobs in Tampa, FL

This is a highly responsible supervisory engineering position.  An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, budgeting, and supervising the engineering design and drafting activities.  Work normally requires the supervision of and cooperation with engineering and technical subordinates.  Assignments are received in broad outlines and require independent organizing work, formulating technical policies within assigned specialties, and monitoring work to ensure efficient operation.  An administrative supervisor reviews work for overall effectiveness and attainment of objectives within the assigned function.

• Oversee the design of complex electric transmission lines along with overhead and underground distribution power lines and structures for the power grid.
• Applies appropriate industry codes and standards to unique and complex electric transmission and distribution applications and mentors others in their proper use. 
• Oversee engineers/technicians in coordinating T&D facilities impacted by road projects with state and local governmental agencies.
• Serves as Engineering section supervisor, directing engineers and technicians.
• Coordinates assigned functions and activities of this section with other City departments/ divisions, other governmental agencies, private consulting engineers and contractors.
• Provides technical guidance for work assigned and delegates responsibility to lead engineers and technicians.
• Directs work planning, schedules, studies, estimates manpower forecasting program, and budget requirements.
• Assists with materials and construction specifications to be used as standards by the division.
• Plans the scheduling and control of authorized capital projects.
• Maintains records of initiated projects cost and construction data.
• Supervises establishment of equipment operation standards and ratings.
• Participates in design and analysis as necessary.
• Develops and prepares cost estimates for equipment, materials, labor, and preliminary design work, supporting the budgeting process and capital project management.
• Provides technical guidance for work assigned and delegates responsibility to engineers and technicians. 
• Assists in developing engineering standards to be used by the section and supervises establishing guidelines for projects with the Developers and Engineering Firms. Also participates on committees to finalize these engineering standards.  
• Coordinates assigned functions and activities for this section by maintaining proper communications with other departments, divisions, workgroups, and outside agencies. 
• Ensures personnel receive required technical and safety training for the workplace. 
• Directs work planning and scheduling, including manpower forecasting.
• May lead other divisions and City departments on cross-departmental projects and studies. 
• Acts as a representative/liaison with other utility and industry organizations involved in projects and studies.
• Work with construction management support, some field inspections, quality control, and interface with construction crews, as needed, for major construction projects. 
• Ensures all projects and work orders are completed within the planned schedule and budget. 
• Ensures proper records are maintained in accordance with COL and LE standards. 
• May be required to work alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.  
• Position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.

• Performs related work as required.

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Six (6) years of experience in engineering work.   
• One (1) year of experience in a supervisory capacity.

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must maintain a valid telephone number.
• Possession of a Professional Engineer's license issued by the State of Florida is preferred.

• Extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices applied in planning, location and design and as required for carrying out details of standardized design or assigned research.
• Extensive knowledge of fundamental and applied engineering science.
• Extensive knowledge of statistical principles and applications and designing difficult engineering projects.
• Skill in making complex engineering computations and in designing difficult engineering projects.
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate engineers and technicians.
• Ability to plan, budget, and direct an engineering project of considerable magnitude.
• Ability to conduct engineering research, write technical reports, and give reliable advice on complex engineering problems, plan specifications, and reports.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, contractors, employees, and the general public. 

• Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force regularly, and routine keyboard operations.
• The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards.
• The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
