Claims Director directs and oversees the operations of an insurance claims department to meet operational, financial, and service requirements. Establishes policies and procedures for the administration of insurance claims for personal, property, or casualty loss based on coverage, appraisal, and verifiable damage. Being a Claims Director is responsible for the strategic processing and payment of claims. Maintains up-to-date- knowledge of legislation, regulations, and industry events which pertain to insurance claims. Additionally, Claims Director provides expert guidance and consultation to staff on the most complex claims. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Claims Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Claims Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     THE OPPORTUNITY:

    The Director of Claims serves as the primary leader overseeing all commercial lines claims personnel and operations within a specific line of business.  Their duties include maintaining accurate case reserves, prioritizing quality customer service, ensuring thorough claims investigations and effective resolutions, fostering employee growth, safeguarding quality assurance, streamlining business processes within the line of business, overseeing, and leading claim system updates for casualty and property, and managing the casualty vendor relationships.

     

    WHAT YOU’LL DO:

    • Oversee the daily activities of the Auto Claims Team and manage all operational aspects of the Claims Department.
    • The ultimate supervisory role entails overseeing all commercial lines auto claims, supervisors, and examiners handling exposures up to $500,000. This responsibility includes ensuring accurate coverage interpretation, thorough claim investigations, and precise loss evaluations.
    • Guarantee adherence to claims guidelines and unfair claims practice laws across all states, while also being accountable for regular updates to these guidelines.
    • Verify that appropriate reserving, claim investigation, and settlement techniques and strategies are consistently employed.
    • Conduct regular reviews of claims with notable exposures.
    • Perform necessary review and audit of work performed by supervisors, examiners, independent adjusters, and counsel.
    • Work effectively with managers of other departments to assist with the company's overall performance.
    • Encourage employee development using both internal and external sources through the appropriate usage of the performance management process, including performance evaluations and managing disciplinary matters.
    • Collaborate with the management team to create, execute, and oversee a training initiative designed to expedite the onboarding process for new team members and equip them for future responsibilities.
    • Assist in developing strategic goals and objectives for the Claims Department.
    • Effectively manage allocated and unallocated loss adjustment expenses.
    • Respond to states’ insurance departments’ inquiries.
    • Provide necessary information to reinsurers.
    • Evaluate workloads and make appropriate changes as needed.
    • Provide appropriate settlement authority to supervisors and examiners.
    • Responsible for the formulation of the annual auto claims budget.
    • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

     

    WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

    • Four-year college degree or comparable claims work experience
    • Minimum of 10 years of property and casualty experience
    • 10 years of supervisory/managerial experience involving commercial lines claims
    • Insurance Designation, or
    • Pursuit of CPCU or advanced designation

     

    WHO YOU ARE:

    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the litigation process
    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of commercial auto coverage
    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of claims workflow, modern claim systems, and investigative processes.
    • Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
    • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to multitask, and be flexible regarding workload and assignments
