Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner with Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center:

The objective of the Central MN Sexual Assault Center (CMSAC) FNE position is:

To ensure that sexual assault victims have the right to immediate, compassionate, and comprehensive medical-legal evaluation and treatment by a specially trained professional who has the experience to anticipate their needs during this time of crisis.

CMSAC FNE is committed to providing a high standard of evidence collection and medical care to facilitate the victims’ recovery to a higher level of functioning, prevent secondary injury or illness, and ultimately increase the prosecution of sex offenders to reduce the incidence of rape.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Responsible for responding to sexual assault victims at multiple facilities in Central Minnesota. Facilities include Centra Care St. Cloud, Melrose, Paynesville, Sauk Centre, Long Prairie, and Monticello. Majority of forensic exams are completed at Centra Care St. Cloud. In collaboration with law enforcement, the FNE will respond to suspect exams at St. Cloud PD and/or St. Cloud Hospital. Trained FNE’s are employed to:

i. Where to report a sexual assault

ii. Emergency telephone numbers

iii. Where to report a case of child sexual abuse

iv. What happens after a report is made

Medical:

i. Collection of forensic evidence following a sexual assault

ii. Medical procedures including forensic exam, prophylaxis treatment, and emergency contraception

Legal:

i. Respond to subpoenas in criminal court trial’s that involve a sexual assault victim.

Advocacy

i. Work as a team with Central MN Sexual Assault Center’s Advocate’s to address safety, resources, and follow-up services for all victims.

Serve as an employee of Central MN Sexual Assault Center.

Serve as an educator in the community on the importance of forensic evidence collection after a sexual assault for possible future prosecution and for the most sensitive care of the patient/victim in the hospital setting.

Provide accurate information about services, procedures, and resources.

Provide services needed by victims of sexual assault, which may not be available elsewhere.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• MN Registered Nurse with active license in MN without restrictions
• Simulation Lab
• Examiners will complete and orientation period before performing exams on their own
• Completes competency checklist while being observed by an experienced SANE
• Completes a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education annually, related to Forensic Nursing to ensure competency. Required to provide documentation of these trainings.
• 80 percent attendance of staff meetings is required to maintain compliance for FNE’s
• FNE’s are required to perform at least 5-6 examinations per year to remain competent in their role.
• Follows policies, procedures, and protocols for the program.
• Maintains confidentiality of victim/survivors
• Maintains equipment and supplies utilized by the FNE for examination
• Maintains records and statistics, as appropriate
• Takes on-call shifts as scheduled, responding within 45 min to 1 hour of the initial call. FNE’s will carry their own personal cell phones and work from home during on-call shifts.
• Forensic Nurse Examiners agree to sign up for a minimum of 6, 8 hour shifts per month. (48 hours) Several 8-hour shifts are available throughout each month. Signing-up for 6 shifts per month will satisfy the shift requirement. All shifts are Midnight – 8am 8am -- 4pm 4pm -- Midnight.
• Each FNE is required to be on call for one weekend shift every month (8 hours)
• Submits on-call schedule at or before monthly meetings for the upcoming month. On call shifts are first come first serve.
• Holiday requirement- Examiners are required to take call during national holiday hours for a least 2 per year, 1 winter and 1 summer.
• While serving in the role of an FNE, it is important to maintain contact with the Director of Client Services and respond to communication in a timely manner, in general 24-48 hours.
• Maintains contact with the Director of Client Services for at least 1 year after termination of contract and responds to all subpoenas for cases examined while employed with the FNE program.
• Ability to plan and organize work autonomously
• Liaison with other human service agencies, clients, personnel, and individuals in related programs
• Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, and good judgment in executing the role and responsibilities of a nurse examiner

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Requires concentrated, complex, and variable mental efforts, with emphasis on synthesis of information, written and oral communication
• Documentation of updated Hepatitis B vaccination
• Awareness of occupational exposure to blood and body fluids
• Ability to lift materials weighing up to 20 pounds
• Independently mobile. Tasks performed while sitting, standing, and walking. Must have access to reliable transportation to meet the needs of the organization and have a current driver’s license
• Requires access to medical and personal information of a delicate nature, and realizes the potentially serious results of improper disclosure
• An at-will employment relationship exists between the FNE and CMSAC
• Must carry an active driver’s license for traveling to and from cases

REQUIRED TRAINING for application:

• 40 Hour IAFN approved Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Didactic Course- Adult and Adolescent
• 16 Hour IAFN approved Clinical Skills Lab
• At least 1-2 years of professional nursing experience required

PREFERRED, NOT REQUIRED for application:

• 40 Hour IAFN approved Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Didactic Course- Pediatric
• Danger Assessment
• Intimate Partner Violence
• SANE-A National Certification
• SANE-P National Certification
• Experience in Emergency Nursing, OB/GYN, Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, and/or previous FNE experience.
