Claims Manager manages the operations of an insurance claims department to meet operational, financial, and service requirements. Oversees the intake and processing of insurance claims for personal, property, or casualty loss based on coverage, appraisal, and verifiable damage. Being a Claims Manager manages appraisal and examination staff and processes. Assures timely and proper disposition of claims based on policy provisions. Additionally, Claims Manager recommends and implements best practices to ensure complete and thorough claim settlements, legal reviews, and investigations following company policies and insurance industry regulations. Determines the value of settlements for escalated claims. Manages negotiations of settlements and administration of claims in litigation. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Claims Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Claims Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position Description: Manage and oversee clients’ disputes and related claims within assigned region, including but not limited to general liability, builders’ risk, professional liability, pollution and workers’ compensation claims.

    Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities:

    • Manage and ensure claims within assigned region are reported in timely manner to applicable insurance carriers, and delegate or prepare claim documentation and report claim directly to applicable insurance carriers as applicable.
    • Engage with Operations, Safety, and/or Legal teams to ensure initial investigation is conducted and documented via written report; determine and immediately assign third-party incident investigator as necessary.
    • Participate in crisis response team activities within assigned region and assigned clients; provide guidance on steps to strategically manage crisis and claim processes.
    • Direct claims specific carrier to ensure timely assignment of Claims Specialist.
    • Create, maintain, and collect files for all claims records and documentation and within Claims Management System.
    • Oversee flow of documentation and/or claim submission from client to carrier, per standard operating procedures for each claim type.
    • Oversee payments from carrier to relevant party/parties, per standard operating procedures for each claim type.
    • Analyze loss data for claim settlement and reserves and make recommendations to senior and/or client leadership.
    • Prepare periodic reports, such as loss or benchmark reports, as directed using data management systems.
    • Oversee settlement of claims up to permitted settlement authority, escalate to Director, Claims as needed.
    • Partner with Regional Director to participate in selection of Legal representation for claim, as necessary.
    • Lead litigation oversight, strategy, and direction with clients’ leadership and Legal department for assigned claims, as needed.
    • Review legal strategy and documents produced for litigation and mediation statements for assigned claims.
    • Attend trials, mediations, and arbitrations for assigned claims, as required.
    • Participate in and advise on clients’ safety, environmental, operations, and/or legal meetings.
    • May manage team of claims professionals, provide direction of work, assign claims, and serve as escalation point for Claims Analysts and Claims Coordinators.
    • Deliver timely performance feedback to Claims team and execute and/or contribute to performance appraisals during annual performance cycle.
    • Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited program in Business, Insurance, or Risk Management, and minimum of 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
    • Experience and comprehension of general liability, builders’ risk, professional liability, pollution and workers’ compensation claims processes
    • Comprehension of client contracts, insurance policies, and claims documents and practices
    • Familiar with State and local jurisdiction insurance and claims regulations
    • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) knowledge and experience desired; OSHA 30-hour certification, a plus
    • Construction industry or related risk management experience, highly preferred
    • Negotiation and influencing skills
    • Process and critical thinking skills with sound judgement decision-making
    • Analytical and adept at processing and breaking down data into actionable information
    • Self-starter with project management skills and capable of managing concurrent complex projects and tasks successfully to completion
    • Interpersonal and teambuilding skills with ability to work across organizational levels, both internal and external
    • Professional written and verbal communication, and effective presentation skills
    • Proficient in computer skills, Microsoft suite of applications, MS Outlook, and insurance-based risk management information systems
    • Organizational management skills, capable of managing and developing remote teams
    • Limited travel: travel modes include air, train, vehicle
