    General Function of the Position of a Director of Internal Audit:

    Responsible for developing and implementing an effective internal audit program, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines, including but not limited to, the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s Model Audit Rule.  This role will have primary leadership responsibility to ensure effective evaluating, testing, and reporting upon the company’s financial and operating controls.  


    Duties and Responsibilities of the Director of Internal Audit: 

        Develops and executes an annual Audit Plan designed using a risk-based multi-year approach.

        Leads discussions with senior management, the Audit Committee, and the external auditor regarding internal audit plans, activities, and findings.

        Prepares and presents an annual risk assessment that identifies key business risks and the adequacy of the processes and controls.

        Oversees the planning and completion of operational, financial and compliance audits to evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls.

        Accountable for maintaining internal auditing standards governing all audit activities.

        Understand the different controls environments for the various business areas and collaborate with colleagues across all aspects of the organization to develop, document, review, and test internal controls and processes.

        Provides knowledgeable and objective counsel to executive management and the Audit Committee on key controls, ethics, and compliance matters.

        Incorporate and manage staff and the use of third parties as needed to achieve the internal audit goals.

        Establish policies and procedures to guide the internal audit staff and facilitate consistent, high-quality outcomes and deliverables.

        Manages employees within the department, including but not limited to hiring, training, and developing employees, delegating work assignments, writing and conducting performance appraisals, salary recommendations, coaching and counseling, and administering corrective actions.

        Ensures the team works efficiently and effectively, maintaining Internal Audit methodology and standard, in the planning, execution and reporting of deliverables.

        Maintains audit procedures manual and updates as needed, to include sampling guidelines, monitoring processes and issue tracking and remediation.

        Participates in entrance and exit meetings with the business units.

        Review, finalize and deliver audit reports; communicate audit findings and develop recommendations for executive management and Audit Committee.

        Oversees coordination of tracking and uploading of requested items for regulatory examinations and external audits.

        Stay updated on regulatory changes and adjust internal audit processes accordingly.

        Ensures compliance with Model Audit Regulations.

        Review, finalize and deliver annual Management Report on Internal Controls Over Financial Reporting. 

        Regular and timely attendance in the office is an essential function of the job.

    In addition to the duties and responsibilities set forth above, the employee occasionally may be asked to assist in other duties throughout the company on an as-needed basis.  At no time will any employee be expected to perform any duties, which he or she is not mentally or physically capable of performing.


    Qualifications of the Director of Internal Audit:

        Bachelor’s degree or Equivalent in Finance, Accounting and/or Business Administration is required.

        4 years public accounting or internal audit experience is required.

        Certifications such as CPA or CIA is preferred. 

        Insurance industry experience is preferred.

        Demonstrates the ability to quickly establish credibility and capability to effectively build rapport with key partners.

        Exceptional business partner with outstanding ability to collaborate and work cross functional and at multiple levels of the organization through influence rather than direct authority.

        Possess business acumen and judgment plus ability to resolve and communicate key issues to all levels.

        Approachable, able to collaborate with others while maintaining appropriate independence.

        Must possess the ability to handle confidential information in an appropriate and professional manner.

        Superior oral and written communication; comfortable making presentations to executives, groups of professionals, external auditors, and regulators.

        Skills in analyzing and interpreting regulations and laws.

        Strong technical skills, including advanced Excel and Word.

        Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and organizational skills.

        Experience leading, coaching, and mentoring direct reports.

        Excellent time management skills and accustomed to meeting deadlines.

        Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple demands.
