General Maintenance and Operations Supervisor

  • Duties

    • Responsible for the overall planning of work assigned to a marine terminal facility (maintenance shop).
    • Ensure all personnel, materials, equipment, and arrangements are available at the work site.
    • Coordinate the work of the marine terminal facility with floating plants and navigation locks and dams.
    • Direct the work activities and personnel of the marine terminal facility (maintenance shop).
    • Counsel employees on problems and take corrective action on conduct and performance problems to resolve minor grievances.
    • Maintain various production reports and records as required.
    • In addition to the supervisory duties, you must be a Is fully qualified journeyman in at least one trade: Occasionally perform one or more of the following duties: operate Class I or Class II crane:
    • operate heavy trucks; operate other heavy equipment; operate forklift; or, perform electrical work, welding or machining (if qualified).
    • Drive a personal or government vehicle to conduct site visits along approximately two-hundred miles of river to inspect on-going work activities.

    • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment, and every two (2) years follow up physical exam required.
    • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Drug screening and random drug testing.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Crane Certification within one year of appointment.
    • This position requires Heavy Lifting of up to 45lbs.
    • Valid state driver’s license required
    • A supervisory position requires completion of a one-year supervisory probationary period for first time supervisors to provide the agency with an opportunity to assess supervisory performance.
    • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain District operator's permits for various equipment within 12 months of your appointment.

    There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

    Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) supervisor without more than normal supervision. Experience leading a work team with minimal supervision. I am able to plan and independently perform tasks in the areas of maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, heavy equipment operation and operating and maintaining marine facilities and equipment. I am able to work as part of a crew and to assume responsibility for leading in the accomplishment of tasks. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
    • Physical Effort: Incumbent is required to stand, stoop and work in cramped position on floating plant, over water, in shops and outside in all kinds of weather conditions. Frequently lifts 15-25 pounds and occasionally lift in excess of 45 pounds. In conjunction with performing crane operation duties, incumbent is subject to physical strain from swaying or jarring movements of the crane and makes continual control changes to maneuver the crane and load about obstructions, to stay within the lifting capacity, and to position the load at the desired location. Operators remain in a set position for a long period of time.
    • Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside, often on floating plant over water, sometimes on man baskets and scaffolding up to 50 feet high, in all kinds of weather conditions. During crane operations, incumbent is subject to dangers that may cause injury from overturning crane, falling, and being struck by loads.
    • Employees are required to follow established safe working procedures. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided to 11inimize or reduce hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
