Temporary Part-Time TRIO Pre-College Specialist
  • Southwestern Oregon Community College
  • Coos Bay, OR PART_TIME|TEMPORARY
  • To assist economically and educationally disadvantaged youth to achieve school success, graduate from high school, and enroll in post-secondary education. To contribute to the accomplishment of TRIO pre-college project objectives.

    *This position is contingent on Grant funding*
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    Outreach (50% of Time)
    1. Travel to targeted schools to establish and maintain positive liaison with administration,
    2. faculty, and staff.
    3.  Recruit participants, implement student support activities as delineated in the grant (regular.
    4.  Identify appropriate program participants and obtain required information to document eligibility. communication, tutoring, college guidance).
    5. Make individual, small group and large group contacts with students and parents.
    6.  Accompany participants on field trips to sights of career and cultural interest when scheduled. Travel to college campuses for student visits when scheduled.
    Program Support (25% of Time)
    1.  Assess and evaluate participant needs and outcomes as well as program eligibility.
    2.  Work under the direction of the Educational Talent Search/Upward Bound project director to implement program priorities and achieve project goals.
    Record Keeping (25% of Time)
    1. Maintain records of all services and activities for each participant assigned.
    2. Track regular contacts with students.
    3. Work with confidential databases.
    4. Maintain timelines and deadlines.
    Performs Other Duties and Special Projects as Required/Assigned
    1. Attend meetings and training sessions as directed.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bachelor’s degree and/or work experience in similar programs with current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program may be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
    Two (2) years experience in providing direct support services to economically and/or educationally disadvantaged youth.

    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter. Ability to effectively communicate orally with groups and/or individual, and deal with peers, the public and the community in a positive, empathetic and professional manner.
    • Knowledge of college systems of a sufficient level to advise high school students in the knowledge, skills and attitudes requisite for success in post-secondary courses and programs.
    • Ability to follow established procedures and work independently to accomplish those procedures.
    • Ability and willingness to manage a work schedule with self-discipline, including travel, various hours and possible weekends/evenings, as well as work days at other college locations.
    • A level of computer literacy sufficient to use software such as word processing, spreadsheets and data bases to produce correspondence, documents, and reports as required by the position.
    • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives, and abilities. Sensitivity to barriers faced by students from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
    • Ability to consistently convey a pleasant and helpful attitude by using excellent interpersonal and communication skills to control sometimes stressful and emotional situations. Requires sufficient communication and human relations skills to resolve complaints/issues, defuse anger, and gain cooperation.
    • Strict adherence and understanding of Federal, State, and Community College confidentiality rules and regulations.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge, skills and abilities will receive preferred consideration through the selection process.
    • Experience working with Douglas County schools and/or their internal systems.
    • Experience working with federally funded educational grant programs; experience teaching or counseling disadvantaged students.
    • As required by program criteria, preference will be given to candidates that have experienced the same types of issues and barriers as the program’s target population.

    Current or must obtain within six (6) months of hire a valid Oregon driver’s license.
