    Randolph-Macon College, a private, coeducational liberal arts college in Ashland, Virginia, invites applications for an experienced and innovative financial leader to serve as Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF) Reporting to the President, the Vice President oversees the operations of the accounting system which monitors all transactions, maintains responsibility and custody of all College funds, and oversees operation of the Business Office, Human Resources, Campus Store, Physical Plant, Construction Management, Information Technology Services, and works closely with the Vice President for Enrollment overseeing Financial Aid. While the start date is negotiable, the preference is March 2024.

    Located 20 minutes north of Richmond, Virginia, Randolph-Macon College (RMC) has seen steady growth in enrollment over a 15-year period as well as improved retention. RMC’s 1,500 undergraduate students pursue their academic paths in more than 55 areas of study. The College’s historic 125-acre campus has been transformed over the past two decades with more than a dozen renovations and acquisitions and 12 new buildings and facilities. RMC is known in the region for strong academic programs in a variety of fields, with a core foundation in the liberal arts as well as more recent investments in Engineering, Nursing, Cybersecurity, and its single graduate program in Physician Assistant Studies.

    A very high percentage of students are engaged in extracurriculars. The DIII Athletics program boasts 18 sports as part of the ODAC conference, and has been highly successful in recent years. Approximately a third of students are student-athletes.   

    The College has an annual budget of approximately $60 million and an endowment of $205 million. The financial stability of the College is strong as demonstrated by the following:

    • A stable S&P rating
    • Forty-four years of a balanced budget on modified-cash basis and ten years of positive full-accrual operating results
    • CFI has averaged 7.44 over the last five years
    • Debt strategically managed with 99% of debt fixed to maturity through public finance
    • History of stability with the CFO position with the last three incumbents serving at least 13 years each when they retired. 

    The Opportunity

    RMC seeks an experienced and innovative leader who will embrace the collegiality of campus life and collaborate on campus-wide initiatives designed to create efficiency, effectiveness, and growth to serve the College’s higher education mission. As the Chief Financial Officer, the VPAF works in close consultation with the President, the Board of Trustees, and the Cabinet to provide overall leadership and direction for the financial management of the College. The ideal VPAF will be able to demonstrate a drive to effectively manage the College’s resources as well as strategically plan for growth through financial acumen.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Serve as member of the President’s Cabinet, the primary management team at the College.
    2. Keep all financial records of the College as suggested in the Audit Guide of Colleges and Universities, and to be responsible for the receipt, disbursement, and custody of all College funds, including gifts and endowments.
    3. Leadership in College audit process.
    4. Maintain and operate an accounting system for College financial records, and prepare financial reports as required by the Trustees and the College administration.
    5. Chairs the College Budget Committee which is responsible for developing the annual operating budget.  Formulates a balanced budget based on the Committee’s recommendations; proposes budget to President for final approval; administers this budget; and generate reports as necessary.
    6. Monitor and be responsible for the purchase of all goods and services required in the operation of the College, and negotiate key contracts including Dining Services.
    7. Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Trustees Committees on Audit, Buildings and Grounds, Finance, and Investment.
    8. Oversee College financial planning, including investments.
    9. Oversee the operation of the Business Office and works closely with the Vice President of Enrollment in overseeing the financial aid of the College.
    10. Oversee the operation and maintenance of the physical plant and grounds to include the construction of new facilities, the renovation/remodeling of existing facilities, and the maintenance of all facilities and grounds.
    11. Oversees College debt and cash flow needs.
    12. Oversee the operation of the Office of Human Resources.
    13. Oversee the Information Technology Services function.
    14. Oversee the operation of the auxiliary enterprises of the College, including but not limited to the operation of Campus Store, Copy Center, Mail Room, and Summer Programs. Works closely with the Vice President of Student Affairs in managing the dining contract.
    15. Manage 6 direct reports with total departmental staffing of 83
    16. Other duties as assigned by the President.

    Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities 

    1. Bachelor’s degree required with MBA and/or CPA preferred. 
    2. Strong preference for at least ten (10) years of related professional financial experience that demonstrates progressive responsibility and evidence of strategic leadership.
    3. Strong preference for at least five (5) years of applicable higher education financial management experience. 
    4. Broad technological experience optimizing the use of complex automated systems, analytical tools, and reporting implementation.  
    5. Experience in capital projects and bond financing is a plus.  
    6. Ability to think strategically, anticipate opportunities, create a shared vision, promote change, and implement new strategies in a complex environment with a diverse constituency. 
    7. Outstanding leadership abilities with demonstrated successes guiding people and organizations. 
    8. Strong organizational skills. 
    9. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.  
    10. Commitment to a higher education mission and student success.
