    Brief Summary of Job Duties

    Works to optimize philanthropic support for the College of Engineering (COE) and other collaborative fundraising initiatives in response to academic priorities established by the dean of COE ("dean") and select affiliated program directors. As a member of the Development Office staff, fundraising efforts are devoted primarily to engineering with the remaining time to other University initiatives, as appropriate. Fundraising focus will be on computer science and bioengineering while still inclusive of the broader College of Engineering. Approximately ninety percent time on fundraising activities for gifts of $25,000 and up, with emphasis on gifts of $100,000 and more. Focuses ten percent on other activities related to fund raising and administrative duties such as coordinating and executing aspects of the engineering development program. Coordinates and executes planned strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, closing and stewardship of gifts primarily from individuals, but may include, as appropriate, corporations and foundations. Works personally with donor prospects and supports the dean, faculty and volunteers in prospect relationships when appropriate, in order to maximize philanthropic support for engineering and UC Santa Barbara, raising gifts to meet identified fundraising priorities. Works to ensure that all aspects of his/her development program are internally consistent, thematically related, and compatible with the policies and priorities of the relevant academic units, Development Office and University.

    Required Qualifications

    • Demonstrated skill at gift negotiation and gift solicitation to engage complex and sophisticated individual, corporate, and foundation donors toward significant philanthropic outcomes.
    • Demonstrated skill in writing professional, clear, and compelling proposals and other solicitation materials, acknowledgments, reports, public announcements and routine business correspondence.
    • Ability to articulate the case for higher education, and UCSB's science and technology programs.
    • Solid verbal communication skills to make persuasive oral presentations to colleagues, internal and external constituencies, and to plan and conduct participatory meetings, to gain acceptance of decisions, and to advise and collaborate with others.
    • Knowledge of office and productivity software sufficient to function smoothly in a highly technology-based environment (including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and Internet applications).
    • Ability and motivation that values a collaborative working environment to establish strong, interpersonal relationships with academic leaders, faculty, community leaders, donors, volunteers, and other staff.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, under deadlines, and without close supervision; self-direction in the initiation, coordination and completion of tasks and acute attention to detail is essential.
    • Ability to accept responsibilities and assignments and to handle them thoroughly.
    • Outstanding social skills, instincts, discretion and judgment, coupled with strong personal ethics.

    Education

    • Bachelor's Degree in related field and/or equivalent experience & training required

    Work Experience

    Required:

    • 1-3 years Annual gift and major gift experience, raising four to six-figure gifts.
    • 1-3 years Demonstrated skill at gift negotiation and gift solicitation to engage complex and sophisticated individual, corporate, and foundation donors toward significant philanthropic outcomes.

    Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

    90% Fundraising

    • Fundraising focus will be on computer science and bioengineering while still inclusive of the broader College of Engineering.
    • Identifies, cultivates, solicits, closes and stewards gift prospects.
    • Devotes significant efforts to primarily solicit individuals, but also solicits, as appropriate, corporations and foundations.
    • Meets individually with prospects in and out of the Santa Barbara region.
    • Supports and staffs the dean, and/or other senior administrators, as appropriate, in prospect relationships including proposing planned strategies leading to gifts; briefings in preparation for development-related meetings; drafts or plans letters to donors and prospects, comments for donor gatherings; and sets and coordinates individual meetings with many prospects.
    • Attends various meetings and University events, including some activities on weekends, evenings, and out of town, in order to cultivate or solicit donors.
    • Develops and manages volunteer involvement for the engineering fundraising effort to the extent appropriate for the program, including working with trustees of the UCSB Foundation Board.

    10% Strategy & Administration

    • Creates a case for support for assigned fund raising priorities.
    • In connection with COE leadership, participates in creating the overall annual plan, expenditure budget and revenue goal for the development of private gift support for key fundraising initiatives. This plan is based on direction given by the senior assistant dean of development for Engineering and the Sciences ("assistant dean") and approved by the dean and academic leadership.
    • Manages an entertainment and travel expenditure budget.
    • Initiates donor recognition and publicity, as appropriate (working in coordination with the Engineering and Sciences, Stewardship, Donor Relations and the Office of Public Affairs).
    • Designs and executes tailored acknowledgments and recognition of gifts (working in coordination with Donor Relations).
    • Participates in various Development Office, Engineering and the Sciences or other University committees, or handles special assignments, as appropriate.
    • Collaborates with other college, school and unit-based development officers, in particular in the context of the Campaign and collaborative academic programs and activities.
    • Completes other duties as assigned.

    Reporting and Functional Relationships - The Director of Development (DOD) works as a member of the Engineering and Sciences Development Office staff. The DOD's program plan approval and performance evaluation are carried out jointly by the dean (and, when appropriate, other affiliated program directors) and the supervisor: the assistant dean of development for COE. The academic leadership evaluates the DOD's performance in areas such as knowledge of engineering initiative specific goals, case for support and fundraising priorities; ability to serve unique academic area needs and proficiency in execution fundraising plans. The academic leadership establishes fundraising priorities. The supervisor (Assistant Dean of Development for the College of Engineering) evaluates the DOD's performance in areas such as knowledge of the University's case for support, professional fundraising procedures, techniques and standards; achievement of fundraising and volunteer management goals as defined in the annual operating plan; and knowledge of and compliance with University of California, UC Santa Barbara, and the UCSB Foundation policies, procedures and systems as these pertain to development. The DOD coordinates with both the academic leadership and the supervisor to establish an action plan, goals and priorities, and day-to-day activities. The DOD's other working relationships include a close, daily working relationship with engineering and senior administrators and members of the Development Office staff. The DOD has close working relations with colleagues throughout the Development Office and Division of Institutional Advancement. The DOD ensures coordination between fundraising for engineering initiatives and other Development Office programs such as the development programs for other colleges, schools and units; regional giving; Foundations, Corporations, Planned Giving; Prospect Research; Prospect Management & Tracking System (PMATS); Donor Relations and Stewardship; donor acknowledgment programs which support development, and other development-related units. In this effort, the DOD ensures maximum and efficient use of the University Development and Institutional Advancement programs, to support the engineering program's efforts to raise gifts. The DOD also interacts with faculty, administrative staff and the larger campus community.
