Vice President of Academic Affairs

  • SUMMARY The Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer for the college and as such reports directly to the President. The Vice President's position has both delegated and direct line administrative responsibilities. The Vice President will serve on the President's Administrative Staff. Primarily responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of quality instruction, the Vice President's responsibilities can be divided into four major areas: administration, budgeting, programs and courses, and instructors/directors.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    A. Administration
    a. Serve as part of the President's Administrative staff.
    b. Coordination of all aspects of college instructional programming, staffing, planning and evaluation.
    c. Develop and maintain positive relationships with area business, industry, school district personnel, and governments.
    B. Budgeting
    a. Develop, recommend, and administer budget(s) for all instructional programs.
    b. Recommend instructor and administrative contracts for positions reporting to or below the V.P. for Academic Affairs.
    C. Programs and Courses
    a. Coordinate with Directors to insure comparability of on and off campus courses and online courses.
    b. Develop class schedules.
    c. Develop, nurture, and administer credit and noncredit courses.
    d. Prepare and submit to the State all necessary academic reports and proposals for new programming.
    e. Assess need for and, if appropriate, seek State approval for new courses and programs.
    f. Administer programs of academic quality:
    i. Instructor selection and orientation;
    ii. Insure adequate and appropriate facilities;
    iii. Promote academic standards;
    iv. Comparable content and standards in on and off campus courses.
    g. Develop the College calendar.
    h. Evaluate advisory committees' activities.
    i. Maintain official course files.
    j. Develop and maintain instructional assessment procedures.
    D. Instructors/Directors:
    a. Select, contract, develop, assign, and evaluate instructors and assistant deans.
    b. Develop and implement faculty orientation and in-service training programs.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Manages subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of 300-400 employees, Regional and Online Instruction, College Library/Resource Center, and several short-term grant programs. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Also, directly supervises two non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and hiring employees in accordance with Human Resource procedures; training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    Doctorate preferred; Master's considered. Experience in community college administration, teaching, marketing, and academic accreditation. Should have an administrative style that is compatible with participatory management.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
