Communications Director directs an organization's internal and external communications strategies and programs. Directs and oversees communications programs that effectively describe and promote the organization and its products. Being a Communications Director may conduct market or public opinion research to assess program outcomes. Suggests promotional campaign ideas in various types of media, as well as counsels top management on effective communication strategies. Additionally, Communications Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Communications Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     • 2-3 years of experience in communications or marketing for government or non-profit organizations
    • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public policy or other relevant field of study
    • A demonstrated design sensibility
    • Preferred software familiarity: Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Forms), Microsoft Office, Canva or Adobe, Mailchimp or ConstantContact
    • Existing relationships with and understanding of the Orange County press landscape is a plus
    • Access to a personal vehicle is required.

    Duties Description
    The Office of New York State Senator James Skoufis seeks a highly motivated Director of Communications to provide strategic oversight and execution of the Senator’s messaging, external communications, and press relations in his Cornwall District Office. Candidates must be highly dependable, organized, and have strong written and oral communication skills.

    The right fit for this position is someone who performs calmly under pressure, possesses strong social skills, is a creative problem solver, has a passion for public service or mission-oriented work, and thrives in work environments that require self-direction.

    This dynamic role will include the following responsibilities:
    • Prepare media advisories, press releases, statements, talking points, quotes, and speeches.
    • Plan, execute, and document press conferences in locations throughout Orange County, including interfacing with local officials, members of the press, and community partners.
    • Occasional travel to/coordination in Albany is required.
    • Draft, post, and monitor social media content across the Senator’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages.
    • Advise staff on the Senator’s positions and prepare internal and external talking points and constituent responses.
    • Field calls and inquiries from members of local, state, and national press.
    • Schedule and coordinate media appearances for the Senator.
    • Staff the Senator at local events, taking photos/video when appropriate.
    • Attend local events on the Senator’s behalf, with occasional speaking opportunities.
    • Maintain and publish content on the Senator’s NYSenate.gov microsite.
    • Draft, design, and distribute email newsletters to constituents using the Senate’s Bluebird Mail platform.
    • Collaborate with the Event Coordinator and other members of staff to produce event materials, posters, flyers, and invitations.
    • Maintain digital and analogue records of the Senator’s press clippings.
    • Monitor and maintain the Senator’s listing and photos across various websites.
    • Equipment provided: Canon Rebel T7 DSLR, RODE Wireless GO II Mic System, Tripod, Desktop Computer, External Hard Drive for Media, Shared Canva Pro Account

    Additional Comments
    The salary range is $50,000 to $58,000, commensurate with education and experience.
