Communications Editor Supervisor supervises a staff of editors who write, prepare, and review content to be used in company publications. Helps develop, maintain, and implement editorial policies and standards and ensure conformance. Being a Communications Editor Supervisor oversees and reviews the team's work product. Monitors accuracy and ensures documents and materials follow organizational standards and branding. Additionally, Communications Editor Supervisor manages project tasks and timelines. Manages the coordination of production and distribution activities. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Communications Editor Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Communications Editor Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Thorough knowledge of functional area and department processes.     This position is responsible for gathering, assigning, and processing hard news, spot news and enterprise stories for the print and online editions of the newspaper and associated social media. The news editor makes story, photo, and video assignments, works closely with the reporting staff and other editors, helps to copy edit stories, helps to proof pages and prepares a daily story/photo and video budget. The news editor also has reporting duties, which may include town and county government, coverage of County courts, police, and other breaking news. The news editor takes part in news meetings with the Publisher to plan and to discuss stories for the next edition, online content and postings and takes part in long-range planning for future story, photo, and video projects. The news editor also updates the assignments calendar and fields inquiries from the public in person, on the phone and via email and social media.

    The successful candidate must be flexible, a self-starter, attentive to details, diplomatic, able to provide direction, and able to multi-task. Candidates for this position should have strong interpersonal skills and client orientation and exhibit an ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts.


    Essential Functions

    • Ability to write, to take photos and video, strong organizational skills.
    • Must be able to edit and format copy and be able to anticipate workloads based on production schedules.
    • Makes assignments, edits copy, captions, video content and helps to proof pages.
    • Performs job duties and conducts self in accordance with company core values.
    • Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with internal and external contacts.


    Minimum Requirements

    Prior reporting/editing experience required. Demonstrated ability to multi-task.

    Technology Skills

    Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is helpful along with social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.


    Education

    Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field and professional writing experience preferred.
