    POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT: The Communications and Advancement Manager is responsible for the coordination of all United Way of Broome County’s (UWBC) marketing and communications programs, and ensures the alignment of all collateral with the organization’s mission and vision. Through the development of shared community visions for UWBC’s building blocks to a quality life (health, education, and financial stability), the Communications and Advancement Manager creates, plans, develops, manages, and implements marketing and communications initiatives and activities to advance the identity of UWBC. The Communications and Advancement Manager will oversee all digital marketing and communications strategies and tactics and work with the Marketing Strategist and Operations Coordinator to manage short- and long-term public relations activities. The Communications and Advancement Manager will assist the Community Relations and Development Director in the execution of all annual campaign events, employee campaigns, solicitation of corporate and individual donors, report campaign progress to stakeholders, and ensure donors and sponsors are engaged and appropriately recognized.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Marketing and Communications Strategy Development and Implementation

    • Develop an annual marketing and communications tactical plan, including public relations and digital marketing.
    • Conceptualize and execute a comprehensive donor and stakeholder plan that supports UWBC’s strategies and objectives, builds relationships with key audiences, and works to position the organization as the leader in Community Impact (CI)
    • Work closely with staff to ensure consistent and precise messaging to the community (media, donors, volunteers, staff, etc.) on the CI product
    • Collaborate with other UWBC departments to integrate marketing and communications strategies
    • Serve as a liaison with internal and external customers for messaging, themed materials, and development of key communication strategy
    • Articulate UWBC’s value proposition to external audiences through writing and editing communications materials, which may include press materials; social media strategies and content; website content; brochures; fact sheets; success stories; donor campaign materials; and other tools to tell the story of UWBC’s work with community partners
    • Manage the marketing budget, ensuring all media buys are timely and include in-kind donations
    • Develop and execute integrated communications plans to help drive success of UWBC’s partner relationships and initiatives. This may include:
    • Paid, earned, shared, and owned communications
    • Initiating communications ideas and innovations that help grow partnerships
    • Leading execution
    • Developing communications around impact initiatives 

    Media Relations

    • Oversee the development and maintenance of a favorable public and media relations environment
    • Establish media and community outreach objectives
    • In partnership with the Community Relations and Development Director, serve as a spokesperson for UWBC in dealing with the general public, media, and other constituencies
    • Collaborate with UWBC departments to identify newsworthy events and develop targeted stories for placement in all communications channels
    • Under the direction of the Marketing Strategist and Operations Coordinator, initiate and coordinate media interviews, photo opportunities, press conferences, and events

    Social Media / Digital Communications

    • Oversight and management of social media pages and platforms under the UWBC umbrella, including review of information submitted by other team members for posting.
    • Support the organization’s social media presence to drive online awareness of United Way of Broome County, as well as attract a new audience and engage them in the organization’s work
    • Approve and/or post and monitor social media content while staying current on new marketing and communications technologies, trends, and ideas
    • Oversee organizational training on use of social media and serve as ambassador and role model for effective use of social media in both organizational and personal contexts
    • Assist in the creation and maintenance of video, flash, graphic, and audio elements of all marketing efforts and coordinate all photography at events and photo shoots

    Resource Development (RD): Advertising, Marketing and Special Events

    • Develop and maintain an advertising program to promote achievement of UWBC goals and objectives
    • Continually develop new opportunities to raise awareness of the UWBC brand
    • In partnership with the RD team, manage year-round donor communications, advertising, printing, and publications,
    • Manage communications, advertising, printing, and publications for UWBC programs, including 211, VITA, and HLC
    • Direct all marketing and communication materials, including negotiating timelines and obtaining stakeholder buy-in
    • Apply marketing strategy to events by working in partnership with RD team on all aspects including budget, communications, signage, catering, registration, and staff activities
    • Review, compose, and edit scripts for events as needed

    Volunteer and Community Engagement

    • Provide oversight and management to the volunteer initiatives of the organization.
    • Support the Marketing and Volunteer Engagement Specialist in their work to identify, implement, and evaluate volunteer opportunities and strategies to improve outcomes for Broome County
    • Provide community and organizational leadership that positions UWBC as a leader in volunteerism and creates measurable impact for people, companies, and local organizations
    • Provide primary management and oversight for the planning and coordination of all aspects of UWBC volunteer events such as Day of Action, Day of Caring (DOC), MLK Day, the annual Volunteer Conference,
    • Communicate with and support volunteers prior, during, and after DOC event, as well as utilize proper tracking tools to monitor volunteer participation, impact, stats, etc.
    • Support efforts to position UWBC as a thought-leader and global provider of volunteer experiences
    • Continually develop new opportunities to raise awareness of UWBC volunteer opportunities to a wide range of audiences, demographics, etc.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with staff, contributors, agencies, community members, and members of the Board of Directors, to ensure internal and external volunteer satisfaction
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and funding requirements 

    Organizational Leadership

    • Provide direct supervision and direction to the Marketing and Volunteer Engagement Specialist
    • Contribute in the cultivation of an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion by fostering a culture that empowers team members to be successful and bring their full identities
    • Contribute to creating an environment of collaboration and creativity in support of organizational values and goals
    • Assist in selecting, guiding, and motivating the training and professional development of the Marketing and Volunteer Engagement Specialist
    • Participate in promoting the strategic plan of the organization to the community and internal and external stakeholders
    • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies

    QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified candidates for the position will possess the following:

    Education and Experience Required

    • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field, with previous experience
    • Accepted: Associates degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field, with previous experience
    • Experience in digital marketing, video production, photography and/or graphics design
    • Event planning experience preferred
    • Supervisory experience required.

    Skills Required

    • Verbal and written communication skills that include the ability to present ideas clearly and concisely and engage others
    • Working knowledge of the community, nonprofit sector, and local media markets
    • Established relationships with local media contacts preferred
    • Budget management experience
    • Prior supervisory experience to include coaching, mentoring, advising, and challenging others
    • Volunteer management and/or fundraising experience
    • Event Planning experience
    • Working knowledge of print production and the technical aspects of digital marketing
    • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities
    • Ability to use Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically using InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator for graphic design duties and to use Premiere, After Effects, and Media Encoder for production duties
    • Ability to learn and utilize new software and digital platforms
    • Experience using cameras and support systems
    • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and social media savvy
    • Proven organizational and time management skills to prioritize assignments and manage multiple projects simultaneously
    • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively to accomplish duties with minimal supervision
    • Good understanding of group dynamics and group facilitation skills
