    Nature of Work

    The Director - Community Engagement will provide daily management for the Foundation’s equity-centered investment initiatives through the Foundation’s Fund for Louisville which provides funding (grant and non-repayable capital). The Fund for Louisville coupled with several unrestricted field of interest funds fuel the Foundation’s discretionary activities which include program and operating grants to nonprofits, organizational capacity development, awareness initiatives and policy advocacy.

    The Director will supervise a team of Program Officers responsible for investing a portfolio of philanthropic capital by identifying opportunities in underserved communities to support high-impact initiatives with the potential for sustainable social or economic change which outlives the initial investment.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    • Manage the Fund for Louisville multi-million-dollar investment portfolio (grants and other non-repayable funding). Effective funding management includes:

    -Analyze and recommend unrestricted grantmaking strategies that support the Foundation’s mission; improved quality of life, especially for underserved populations; and sustainability of nonprofit sector,

    -Generate and analyze reports on funding data (grants and other non-repayable funding) to evaluate patterns, trends, and possibilities,

    -Develop, maintain, and improve processes for the solicitation, review, and analysis of funding proposals,

    -Develop, maintain and nurture internal and external partnerships essential for an effective system to manage the above items.

    -Monitor legal compliance and maintain departmental policies and procedures as appropriate to adhere to IRS regulations and grantmaking best practices outlined in the Council on Foundations National Standards.

    • Supervise a staff of Program Officers to cultivate diverse investee relationships; assess investee organizations; review investee reports; direct selection committees; and analyze investments for social and financial impacts.
    • In Collaboration with the Sr. VP, Community Leadership, assist in the management of:

    -Fund for Louisville capital raising opportunities with Foundation donors, local and national foundations, corporations, public sector partners and other private and institutional investors,

    -Document and report preparation for the Grant Oversight and Community Engagement Committee responsible for discretionary grantmaking.

    -Outreach, education, communications, and partnership development with external stakeholders interested in advancing the practice of discretionary funding or grantmaking.

    • Engage in a process of continuous learning that requires the collection and communication of information (e.g., research, data) for the refinement, scaling, and sustainability of Foundation initiatives. Communication of information may appear as written analysis of deployed Foundation resources; reports examining issues affecting the assigned portfolio; drafting requests for proposals (RFPs), budgets, and project work plans; authoring articles for internal and external publication; and providing input to improve others’ work products.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Verbal and written communication with diverse constituents.
    • Analytic thinking to identify, gather, evaluate, interpret, and synthesize information.
    • Maintain, document, and keep organized records of information gathered from investees, consultants, and legal counsel.
    • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with recipients of Foundation resources.
    • Recommend calculated risks the Foundation can take to address complex social issues with a focus on long-term benefits and innovation.
    • Collaborate with Foundation staff and Committee to establish specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals.
    • Collaborate and network internally and externally for effective comprehensive solutions.

    Education and Experience

    • 5 years of experience in nonprofit sector, grants management, fundraising, financial services, or community development.
    • Experience managing or administering systems related to grant portfolios.
    • Demonstrated track record managing a multitude of complex tasks and projects simultaneously.
    • Capacity to be highly confidential, discreet, tactful, and act with integrity.
    • Broad experience with the details and challenges of nonprofit management and complex cross-sector initiatives.
    • Aligned and committed to the mission and values of the Foundation.
    • Welcomes organizational growth and change.

    Physical Requirements

    This position may require the ability to lift objects of at least 20 pounds in weight. Job duties require approximately 75% sitting/typing and 25% moving around. Physical requirements will vary depending upon the specific duties to be accomplished. In addition, it is a requirement of this position that the successful candidate be able to maintain a physical presence in the Louisville headquarters offices regularly and consistently and for the full regular work week. Access to and ability to operate a vehicle is required for work-related travel. Attendance may be required at special events during normal working hours or outside the normal work week.

    Compensation

    The position is an administrative, full-time, exempt staff assignment and will be eligible to participate in the Foundation’s Employee Health and Benefits Plan as set forth in the Foundation’s personnel policies. Compensation will be set in accordance with the Foundation’s approved compensation policy.
