Field Organizer - Pacific Northwest Region
  • F Minus
  • Washington, IN FULL_TIME
  • Title: Full-time Organizer - Pacific Northwest Region

Location: All F Minus employees work remotely; this position requires an ability to travel extensively in Oregon and Washington State.

    Reports To: Executive Director

Duration: Initial 6-month contract with possible transition to permanent, full-time position

    Salary: $7,500/month

    About F Minus:
Launched in July 2023, F Minus is a new climate group pushing for divestment from fossil fuel lobbyists. Our revolutionary database of all U.S. state-level lobbyists reveals more than 1,500 lobbyists for oil, gas, and coal companies who are simultaneously lobbying on behalf of climate-stricken local governments, schools and universities, cultural institutions, nonprofit organizations, and other victims of the climate crisis. F Minus is demonstrating the ways in which these lobbyists’ pro-fossil-fuel activities are harming their other, non-fossil-fuel clients, and we are beginning to organize state coalitions to pressure governments, schools, businesses and other organizations to cut ties with them.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
With the Executive Director, develop strategic plans for Oregon and Washington State that identify key sectors and actors we’ll pressure to divest from fossil fuel lobbyists; for example, the Portland Public School System employs the same lobbyists as NW Natural; while King County, Washington employs the same lobbyists as Puget Sound Energy.
Recruit climate groups and other groups to endorse divestment from fossil fuel lobbyists in each state; create and lead working coalitions that will amplify and act on our call for divestment.
Organize events, rallies, and protests calling out fossil fuel lobbyists and entities legitimizing the fossil fuel industry by employing these lobbyists; work with student groups to promote climate strikes and student actions focused on schools and universities.
Through social media and traditional media, call out lobbyists playing both sides of the climate crisis; and pressure their non-fossil-fuel clients to cut ties with them.
Engage and mobilize trustees, board members, and donors to institutions who employ fossil fuel lobbyists, and enlist them as pro-divestment spokespeople. For example, the Portland Art Museum’s lobbyist also works for pipeline builder The Williams Companies.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:

Organizing Experience: Experience as a field organizer and/or community organizing and/or demonstrated ability in onboarding, training, and supporting volunteers. Experience designing and implementing tactics as part of a larger campaign strategy.

Social media proficiency, with a demonstrated ability to engage and mobilize communities around environmental issues; candidates with strong social media skills will also be considered for an expanded role promoting F Minus’s work in states in addition to OR and WA.
Team Building: Demonstrated leadership experience working within a team structure. Ability to build vision, trust, and mutual accountability with team members. Experience working closely with volunteers.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:

    Experience with climate divestment campaigns.
Experience as an organizer or activist for good government campaigns such as campaign finance reform, lobbying reform, and the intersection between racial and social justice issues and money in politics.
Experience as a paid or volunteer lobbyist, and/or experience in working on campaigns with a lobbying component; or experience in government that involved being lobbied.

To Apply: Please send a cover letter and resume to James Browning, Executive Director, F Minus, james.browning@fminus.org

F Minus does not discriminate in employment opportunities or practices on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, familial status, veteran status, disability, AIDS/HIV status, or medical condition.
