Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Harm Reduction and Prevention Manager, and working with other Apex Prevention Staff, this position provides HIV counseling, screening, and testing services utilizing the harm reduction model. This position also consists of networking, building relationships, educating and advocating in the community to establish regular outreach and peer recruitment.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit and intake participants for HIV prevention services
- Provides culturally and linguistically appropriate services and health education to clients
- Provide structured pre-test and post- counseling sessions per CT DPH guidelines and program protocol
- Asses risk, anxiety, and mental health issues within the context of the pre and posttest interview
- Responsible for performing finger stick/vein puncture to collect blood specimens for testing when indicated
- Respond to requests for HIV and AIDS information and refer to local and area resources for support, information and direct services as appropriate
- Maintain accurate client files, referral list and statistical data per CT DPH guidelines and program protocol
- Ensure there is an adequate supply of forms, charts, block drawing supplies, condoms, etc. at all times and report to appropriate parties for inventory replenishment
- Attend State HIV Counselor's meetings, DPH meetings and staff meetings
- Maintain certification of OSHA standards, infection control and universal precaution
- Develop and network relationships with community contacts to effectively reach target population
- Organize, coordinate and/or attend health fairs and events on HIV testing and PrEP information
- Provide follow-up assistance with clients
- Ability to professionally and effectively communicate with co-workers, community based groups, and diverse client groups and maintain confidentiality
Qualifications:
- Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred
- A degree in social work, public health, health promotion or a related field desirable
- Willingness to attend a mandatory three (3) week HIV/AIDS training issued by the State Health Department
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
- Valid Connecticut driver's license
- Must be able to travel between offices and other outreach locations occasionally
