Compensation Director is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the organization's compensation programs, including base pay, incentive pay, and performance management programs. Leads the compensation function and works with senior management to ensure that compensation strategy and programs support the organization's business objectives, meet all legal requirements, and deliver value and equitable pay. Being a Compensation Director develops compensation budget for assigned areas and manages budget after it is approved. Establishes data collection and analysis processes for market, pay equity, and other compensation studies. Additionally, Compensation Director may be responsible for entire organization or for one or more major segments of a larger organization. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Compensation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Compensation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     This role is responsible for driving complex UHG corporate, market group and business segment specific projects, programs, or initiatives to conclusion. The focus of this role is on providing total rewards consulting and analytical support for the UHC Global business. The position consults with the organization on total rewards best practices, develops analytical methods, and reporting formats to assist the organization. Aligns the Enterprise programs (i.e., Common Review, CEO Pay Ratio) with the local data and regulations to ensure our continued compliance across our Total Rewards programs. The UHC Global Total Rewards Director assists total rewards leadership with design, implementation, and strategy for complex division specific total rewards programs, policies, and communications within our enterprise total rewards framework.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    The UHC Director Compensation will lead all total rewards related strategies and activities in support of the Segment goals including:

    • Provide a full spectrum of consulting and analytical compensation services by translating business and segment strategic direction into meaningful compensation programs
    • Consults on all total rewards programs and partners with the enterprise total rewards leadership team as appropriate when working on local market programs
    • Proactively complete needs analysis, problem identification, and recommendations, influencing decision-making at all levels within the organization
    • Apply best practice compensation and benefits principles to provide customized, enterprise-aligned solutions designed to support business, team and leadership strategies
    • Partner with executive leaders and the human capital team to develop appropriate compensation strategies, policies, programs, and communications
    • Assist leadership with determining desired market position for total cash compensation
    • Represent the business segments in the design, development, and implementation of UnitedHealth Group shared services initiatives and conversely represent shared services in  business initiatives
    • Participate directly on enterprise-wide compensation projects including policy and program development and automated solutions
    • Indirectly manage compensation resources through a matrix relationship to deliver design, analysis, implementation, and on-going administration of compensation programs
    • Salary survey participation and analysis and conduct annual review of market data and communicate compensation range information
    • Build solid relationships with leaders of each business to ensure effective compensation solutions and strengthen engagement
    • Conduct annual review of market data and communicate range information.  Performs annual compensation reviews and constructs templates for each individual by analyzing information and evaluating results Provides compensation support through survey participation and analysis, assembling compensation packages, conducting analyses requested by the governing board of the clinic
    • Effectively communicate with peers, People Business Partners and Leaders by proactively sharing information, analysis and solutions, as appropriate
    • Work with the compensation leadership to proactively identify value added compensation initiatives
    • Works directly with People Business Partners on complex field-initiated projects, generally with no oversight
    • Evaluates new jobs for appropriate title and grade, typically at the manager and director levels
    • Remain abreast of best practices and thought in the compensation field
    • Indirectly manage 2-3 Total Rewards resources in the design and administration of UHC Global total reward programs

    Required Qualifications:

    • 10 years of Human Capital experience (emphasis in Compensation) with demonstrated management and project management experience preferred
    • Experience demonstrating business and financial acumen
    • Experience of quickly building relationships, gaining credibility, influencing, and partnering with business leaders and human capital peers across the organization
    • Experience demonstrating successful change management skills
    • Demonstrated experience in measuring and evaluating effectiveness of compensation initiatives
    • Deep understanding of and practical experience in applied compensation principles, methods and tools including functional and technical expertise in the following areas: market analysis, compensation program design, development, and implementation, variable pay (including sales), salary planning/forecasting, acquisitions, and alternative reward design techniques
    • Proven ability to demonstrate their ability to partner with multiple constituents, manage in a matrix relationship environment, strengthen, and deliver on our Compensation agenda, and drive positive change in a high-performance setting
    • Proven leadership consulting skills from assessment through implementation
    • Ability to speak and understand Spanish


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working in a human resources or business function with a strategic business partner and shared service delivery model

    California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
