Compensation Director is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the organization's compensation programs, including base pay, incentive pay, and performance management programs. Leads the compensation function and works with senior management to ensure that compensation strategy and programs support the organization's business objectives, meet all legal requirements, and deliver value and equitable pay. Being a Compensation Director develops compensation budget for assigned areas and manages budget after it is approved. Establishes data collection and analysis processes for market, pay equity, and other compensation studies. Additionally, Compensation Director may be responsible for entire organization or for one or more major segments of a larger organization. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Compensation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Compensation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Detailed Job Description
    Position Summary:
    Provides guidance, coordination, training and support to Human Resource Managers (HRMs) and university leaders in the consistent application of compensation administration policies and procedures.
    Facilitates implementation of university compensation programs and initiatives, including the annual salary adjustment process.
    Conducts research, analyzes data and prepares recommendations requiring a broad understanding of compensation principles, methods and practices. Interacts and advises on sensitive issues with staff and faculty at all levels of the university.
    Utilizes expertise in job analysis and job evaluation and knowledge of the organization structure to determine wage grade assignment for staff positions at all levels. Submits data to compensation surveys; performs analysis and reporting on survey results.
    Reports to the Director of Compensation.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Provides counsel to HRMs as needed in the day-to-day implementation of compensation programs, policies and procedures. Reviews proposed salary adjustments for conformance to established guidelines, policy and practices; recommends corrective or alternative actions to resolve problems; provides counsel for employment offers.
    • Partners with HRMs to analyze and review job evaluation and re-evaluation requests; leads job evaluation process and applies consistent methodology; maintains job evaluation documentation.
    • Submits data to compensation surveys, performs analysis and reporting on survey results; researches and analyzes competitive compensation practices in higher ed.
    • Assists in the planning, coordination, facilitation, administration and reporting of the annual salary review and market adjustment programs for faculty and staff.
    • Maintains and updates compensation data; consults with HRIS analysts regarding data integrity and makes recommendations for system enhancements.
    • Participates in the design and delivery of compensation presentations and training programs.

    Department/College Description

    Required Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelors degree
    Two to three years of analyst experience including complex data analysis, manipulation and reporting.

    SPECIALIZED SKILLS
    • Ability to plan, coordinate and administer complex administrative systems and processes
    • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues
    • Ability to convince others to support a recommended course of action
    • Knowledge of compensation administration principles and procedures
    • Advanced skill level in Excel
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
    • Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    • Knowledge of job analysis and job evaluation principles, methods and procedures
    • Knowledge of federal and state wage and salary laws and regulations
    Preferred:
    BS in Human Resources preferred; CCP certification
    Minimum of two years compensation experience
