Compensation Manager leads the development, implementation, and administration of compensation programs, policies, and procedures. Manages common compensation functions, including survey participation, job evaluation, salary structure development, incentive plan design, pay program administration and other associated initiatives. Being a Compensation Manager ensures that base pay, incentive pay and performance management programs remain competitive and conform to current compensation strategy. Directs data collection and analysis processes for market, pay equity, and other compensation studies. Additionally, Compensation Manager requires a bachelor's degree. May require a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Compensation Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Compensation Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Participates in the development, implementation, administration, and communication of a variety of complex compensation programs and projects which significantly impact system-wide business operations and objectives. Functions as an internal technical consultant to HR, hiring managers, and other clients to identify and resolve various compensation-related issues/questions

    Responsibilities

    • Develops, implements and maintains a variety of specific compensation programs, plans, policies, processes and systems; addresses related administrative issues that may be linked to program and project responsibilities; and otherwise coordinates actions with other operational groups such as Finance, Information Systems, Human Resources Administration, HRIS, Payroll, etc.
    • Performs position analysis and conducts analytical studies such as market analysis, internal equity analysis, and cost modeling for job evaluation purposes; develops and implements compensation reporting and metrics; and researches, monitors, and tracks best practices, internal and external data trends, and related literature.
    • Consults and advises HR, hiring managers, and other clients regarding compensation solutions and tactical approaches; provides interpretive guidance on various professional and statutory (e.g. FLSA) guidelines related to compensation; formulates recommendations and provides data to assist in the development and implementation of system-wide compensation strategies.
    • Develops communications to support delivery and administration of compensation policies, practices and programs.
    • Participates in various third-party compensation surveys; develops reports as necessary to respond to ad hoc requests for salary information/analysis.
    • Reviews new or revised position descriptions to determine appropriate salary grade allocation and FLSA classification; works as needed with managers to revise/modify various position description information (e.g. duties and responsibilities, minimum requirements, etc.) to ensure accurate representation of the job.
    • Reviews proposed non-executive salary actions to ensure conformance with established guidelines and policies; makes recommendations regarding approval/denial of requested exceptions to policy.
    • Assists in the development and facilitation of compensation training sessions to various internal groups.
    • Local driving required.
    • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education:  Bachelor's degree in human resources, accounting/finance, or a business-related field. Masters Degree in a directly-related field preferred.

     

    Minimum Experience:  Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional-level work experience in the areas of base compensation, job evaluation/market analysis, job analysis, and/or directly applicable HR functions. Preference given to candidates with 5 years experience. Strong financial analysis skills; advanced Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) skills; and proficiency with CYBORG, PeopleSoft, SAP, or a related HRIS preferred. Experience in payroll, time keeping, and FSLA also preferred. 

     

    Licensure Requirement:  Employee must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license and state mandated minimum insurance coverage. Driving record must meet Covenant Health minimum standards at the date of hire and throughout employment tenure. Preference may be given to individuals holding a professional HR certification such as CCP, PHR, SPHR, CAC, CCC, or JCA.
