Job Summary
The Director of Compensation will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the payroll department, ensuring accurate and timely compensation processing for a diverse workforce of 10,000 full and part-time employees within a public preK-12 school district in Tennessee.
Essential Functions/Job Duties
Leadership and Management:
● Lead and manage a team of staff members within the payroll department.
● Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure optimal performance and professional development of the team.
● Foster a collaborative and positive work environment. Compensation Strategy:
● Develop, implement, and manage compensation strategies and programs aligned with the school district's objectives.
● Conduct regular reviews of compensation structures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, and payroll-related regulations.
Payroll Operations:
● Oversee all aspects of the payroll process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in the disbursement of salaries and wages, including applicable payroll related deductions..
● Collaborate with HR to maintain accurate employee records related to compensation and benefits.
● Collaborate with HR and IT to explore automated solutions to maximize efficiencies and productivity.
Compliance and Regulations:
● Stay informed about and ensure compliance with payroll taxes, Department of Labor wage hour requirements, and other relevant regulations.

● Work closely with legal and compliance teams to address any issues and changes in legislation affecting compensation.
Financial Management:
● Collaborate with the finance team to monitor and manage payroll expenditures , ensuring cost-effectiveness, accurate accounting, and alignment with overall financial goals within approved budgetary levels.
● Collaborate with the CFO and finance team on financial reporting and analysis related to compensation.
Qualifications:
● A bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
● Proven leadership experience, preferably in a large and complex organization (5 plus years of managerial experience preferred).
● In-depth knowledge of payroll processes, tax regulations, and Department of Labor wage hour requirements (especially as they relate to the public education sector).
● Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
● Experience working with enterprise ERP payroll systems.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
● Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
