About the CPE Department: As a premier comprehensive polytechnic university, Cal Poly is ranked as the best public master's university in the western U.S., while its Computer Engineering Department is ranked as the top public master's level programs in the United States. The program has a strong focus on undergraduate education through a laboratory intensive, hands-on curriculum. Our tenured, tenure-track, and lecturer/adjunct faculty are dedicated educators with a passion for teaching, innovative applied research, interacting with students, and advising student club activities.

The department is a recipient of the prestigious Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Our grant is titled, “Breaking the Binary” which is a collaborative transformation grant that involves rejecting binaries or dualisms commonly used to create hierarchies in engineering thought and practice (rational-emotional, male-female, social-technical, mental-manual, hard-soft, concrete-abstract, etc.) and embracing a complex coexistence; developing new skills in co-creation of holistic learning experiences and inclusive cultures; and evolving personal and professional identities that are constantly challenged and often in flux. Ideal candidates would become partners in this transformative process to achieve our vision:

    · The Computer Engineering Department is a place that supports diversity in race, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and other social identities (in all their combinations) in a manner that transcends current institutional structures.

    · The Computer Engineering Department is a place in which all find community, and where there are support structures that connect students with their peers, that provide mentoring between faculty and students, and that promote collaborative work between faculty. The Computer Engineering Department is a place where each of us can say, “I belong here.”

    · The Computer Engineering Department’s faculty follows a distributed leadership model where all members are leaders in their own way. Faculty trusts in and actively backs each other as leaders. The department values the interdisciplinarity of faculty within and beyond CPE.

    · The Computer Engineering Department is a place where if one encounters an unjust barrier, it is the system that yields. We acknowledge the immense cultural wealth that people bring with them to the Computer Engineering Department and we strive to act in a manner to ensure that wealth is valued and celebrated.

    · The Computer Engineering Department is a place where all understand and value Computer Engineering being more than a sum of the traditional fields from which it grew. The Computer Engineering Department is a place that has insight into societal needs and is agile to adapt to address those needs from a critical theory orientation.

    · The Computer Engineering Department is a place from which industry continues to seek new hires; they value our students’ technical expertise, and, of equal importance, seek out our students because of their diversity in body and voice, because of their ability to negotiate complexity and ambiguity, and because of their capacity, agency, and inclination for change. Our graduates pursue graduate studies and work in nonprofits and educational organizations in increasingly greater numbers.

We are part of the Noyce School of Applied Computing at Cal Poly, a new interdisciplinary school that combines three departments – Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Computer Engineering – to create opportunities for students and faculty using computer principles, concepts, and technologies to address real-world problems. The creation of The Noyce School will, among other things, provide faculty with additional resources for teaching and applied research, and will also provide undergraduate students in computing with opportunities to further their interests in teaching and learning. For more information about the department, please visit https://cpe.calpoly.edu/.
