Conservation Technician jobs in Muskegon, MI

This position is part of our YouthWork Conservation Corps, and is a habitat restoration model utilizing goats, sheep, and other grazing animals to remove invasive species, and mow lawns without using gas powered tools, and toxic herbicides. Conservation grazing or targeted grazing is the use of domesticated grazing livestock to maintain and increase the biodiversity of natural or semi-natural grasslands, pastures, wetlands and many other habitats. The practice has proven to be beneficial in restoring and maintaining grassland and forest ecosystems.

The GoatWork Coordinator will work with diverse staff, hooved animals, partners, and young adults to help prepare young adults for the workforce as they complete service-based environmental conservation projects throughout Michigan. The GoatWork Coordinator will oversee the program’s field operations, and care for the GoatWork team members and the AmeriCorps support members by ensuring the safe, timely, and accurate completion of GoatWork projects. This position will work collaboratively with YouthWork administrative and field staff, project partners, and young people to ensure the program provides effective and efficient services to our partners and AmeriCorps members.

The GoatWork Coordinator will help train and supervise AmeriCorps member field staff, up to 30 goats and dozen sheep, they help to schedule projects, monitor the progress of projects, ensure quality control, and support the logistical and administrative duties of the statewide program. The position requires a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, a love for animals, the environment, and the ability to work independently but ask for support when required. The ideal candidate has experience working in with livestock, and conservation industries and is community-focused with a passion for conservation, the protection of our changing climate and impacts natural resources.
