Construction Management Director oversees construction projects and operations to meet the organization's financial and growth objectives and fulfill client contractual requirements. Implements best practice construction methods to improve efficiency, productivity, and project outcomes. Requires a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or related field. Typically reports to senior management. The Construction Management Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Construction Management Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Director of Planning & Construction Management

  • Primary Purpose:
    The Director of Planning & Construction Management serves as a member of the Business Operations senior leadership team under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer. The Director of Planning & Construction Management is responsible for leading the facility planning and construction processes and associated business standards in accordance with university strategic goals. Responsible for coordinating the facilities master planning process and is responsible for capital project management. Capital project management includes all major facility programming, design and development phases, and associated approvals.

    Essential Functions:
    Leads the programming, design, and construction for all capital projects.
    Responsible for all related programming, design, and construction services including cost-modeling, scheduling, contract management, and document development.
    Oversees and maintains University-wide Facilities Master Plan.
    Develops and manages planning and construction project budgets and timelines.
    Negotiates and manages RFPs and contracts in support of construction projects.
    Advances sustainable planning and construction in compliance with policy, stays current with best practices in sustainable facilities development, and incorporates them where applicable.
    Prepares presentations for senior leadership team members, Regents, and donors on strategies and solutions related to construction and capital planning considerations.
    Develops and carries out facilities planning and capital project policies and practices.
    Coordinates with outside regulatory and governing agencies to ensure compliance with codes and regulations, and when appropriate works with outside agencies to modify or interpret existing codes and regulations that impact the university.
    Guides and coordinates construction management operations, including overseeing administrative staff, project coordinators/managers, internal/external construction stakeholders, and contractors to ensure quality facility development administration.
    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelors Degree.
    Seven (7) years of progressively responsible construction management experience plus five (5) years of direct, relevant experience in all stages of capital projects including pre-planning/programming, design development, construction, contract administration, and facility delivery.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Masters Degree in a related field.
    Ability to review and understand all design documents, specifications, and all related construction documents.
    Advanced knowledge and skills in risk management to help build quality projects safely and deliver facilities that are safe in all respects for occupants.
    Knowledge of, and experience in, applying the principles, problems and methods of project management activities and construction oversight.
    Ability to prepare and manage project budgets.
    Ability to organize, plan, and coordinate work to meet established deadlines. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel, and specialized construction software (such as, AutoCAD, REVIT).
    Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, problem solving and report writing skills.
    Advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including highly developed political acumen and skill in working effectively with diverse project constituencies.
    Advanced, innovative and creative problem solving skills including problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills and skill to determine workable solutions that may require application of technical advice or counsel.
    Advanced knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, building code compliance, plan check, permits, laws, policies and practices.
    Advanced skills in navigating and achieving balance between ensuring public safety through absolute compliance with codes and contract documents and still maintain and meet critical campus schedules and mandates.
    Knowledge of Federal, State and local construction codes and building regulations, and the ability to independently interpret and implement these regulations as they apply to the University.
    Experience working on construction projects at a University.
    Experience working on or managing a variety of project types including athletic and recreational facilities, housing and dining facilities, classroom/meeting spaces, performance venues, laboratories/clinics and office spaces.
    Experience working as an engineer or design professional in facility planning, design and/or construction.
    LEED accreditation at Green Assistant or Advanced Professional level.
    Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
    Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

    Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
    Work is performed both outdoors and indoors, primarily working in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Work performed during standard business hours. Additional hours may be required to meet business needs or deadlines. Occasional to frequent visits to project sites.

    Valid drivers license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the Universitys fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
