Sr Credit Analyst & SBA Specialist

  • Description

    Responsible for analyzing cash flow and collateral in the underwriting of credit requests to provide thorough and accurate credit presentations in collaboration with the Business Relationship Manager. The analysis will also include the identification of critical strengths and weaknesses along with mitigating factors and appropriate monitoring to address associated risks. This position will work with Business Relationship Managers to analyze and underwrite business and SBA loans. The position serves as the conduit between the credit union and its members in the lending process to assess the various program compatibilities with the financial needs of SCU's members. Serves as a subject matter expert for business lending and SBA lending activities, ensuring that we have the policies and structure in place to adhere to all policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) associated with the various programs and educating business service staff on best practices. Additionally, the position is responsible for understanding and facilitating in the packaging of qualifying loans, to include: understanding borrower's business, analyzing cash flow and financial statements, preparing credit presentations in collaboration with Business Relationship Managers, reviewing documentation required for approval and closing, and assisting in the monitoring and review of the existing business and guaranteed loan relationships together with assisting in the execution of any liquidation plans when necessary.

    These responsibilities also include appraisal and environmental reviews; borrowing base and construction draw monitoring, title chain and collateral lien positions and may include joint calls with Business Relationship Managers to gain necessary insight and information. This position will work closely with Business Relationship Managers, loan processors and support staff. The position may be called on to assist in other complex credit and lending opportunities that require a high level of financial analysis and specialized underwriting.

    Essential Functions
    1. Credit analysis and Underwriting of Business Loans
      1. Perform cash flow and financial statement analysis.
      2. Categorize and use business member information to interpret financial and specific industry trends.
      3. Collaborate with Business Relationship Managers to evaluate overall risk and establish credit worthiness of business members, joining them in meeting with the member if necessary to gain insight and information.
      4. Provide recommendations on loan structure and covenants.
      5. Collaborate with Business Relationship Managers to develop thorough and accurate credit memos and presentations for review by Business Relationship Managers with the appropriate authority and/or loan committee.
      6. Maintain on-going communication with Business Relationship Managers on the loan status.
      7. Conduct appraisal and environmental reviews and update credit memos and presentations as needed.
      8. Will help further the development and training of Business Credit Analysts, under the direction of Business Services - Credit Management.
      9. In the absence or under the direction of Business Services - Credit Management, will review MBL analysis and credit presentations prior to submission for approval.
    2. Serve as a liaison between the credit union and the government entities involving guaranteed lending programs.
      1. Assist in maintaining the credit unions recognized status as a specialized lender in good standing.
      2. Ensure all Standard Operating Procedures of the various programs are met so that we are successful in securing and maintaining Government guarantees at the loan and program level.
      3. In partnership with Business Relationship Mangers, analyze and make credit recommendations on business, SBA, WHEDA, USDA and other complex loan relationship opportunities.
      4. Review files for data integrity and documentation compliance with best lending practices.
      5. Serve as an expert to all staff on matters related to underwriting, originating, and servicing SBA, WHEDA, and USDA loans, train new loan administrators on process and procedures.
      6. Provide support to Business Relationship Managers and processors through real-time feedback, involving trainers and managers as needed to facilitate performance improvement activities.
      7. Collaborate with the Business Services Department to meet specified timeframes for underwriting files and clearing conditions.
      8. Stay up to date on current lending and credit practices, regulations, policies and procedures, assist in educating new and existing processors and credit
      9. Facilitate the packaging of all SBA Loan products, WHEDA facilities, USDA FSA and Rural Development Loans.
      10. Establish all necessary policy, procedures, and processes for the department as well as insuring that all SOP's for the various guaranteed loan programs are met.
      11. Ensure that all required servicing reports are submitted accurately within required timeframes, including but not limited to the Colson 1502 Report.
      12. Serve as a lead team member during SBA and other guaranteed program audits and exams.
      13. Assess daily workload, identify workflow issues and process improvement opportunities and resolve to ensure that priorities are met.
    3. Portfolio Monitoring and Oversight
      1. Oversee and monitor existing loans for compliance with loan covenants.
      2. Monitor borrowing bases and construction draws.
      3. Work with Business Relationship Managers and Credit Department to complete annual reviews and renewals for existing credits.
      4. Collaborate with Business Relationship Managers and Credit Department to assign appropriate risk ratings to new and existing loans and identify any deterioration or change in business member capacity to meet the terms of the loan contract and related covenants.
      5. Assist Business Relationship Managers in reviewing loans that have become delinquent or are otherwise determined to be on our watch list and make recommendations for modification and/or restructure when appropriate.
    4. Member service
      1. Identify opportunities to provide additional advice or information to business members through the underwriting process and share insights with the assigned Business Relationship Manager.
      2. Consistently meet or exceed established turnaround times for completing analysis of new loans and those that are up for renewal.
      3. Respond to staff and member inquiries received by phone or email, both directly and through our department help line.
    5. Act as a resource for other areas of Credit Union
      1. Directly engage with members as needed regarding Business Lending and SBA programs.
      2. Work closely with internal audit to ensure compliance and accuracy of the SBA related documents.
      3. Serve as the expert for internal departments, branches and call center assisting in areas of expertise for proficiency and accuracy.
      4. Keep Supervisor abreast of necessary changes to processes or procedures.
      5. Assist training department with content development for applicable curriculum and materials.
    Additional Functions
    1. Assist with additional projects and other duties as assigned by departmental leadership.
    Job Specifications
    1. Bachelor's Degree in Finance/Accounting or a related field or equivalent work experience.
    2. Five or more years of experience in Business Credit Underwriting and Analysis and/or Lending experience.
    3. Seven or more years' work experience in a financial institution, in positions of increasing responsibility, preferred.
    4. High degree of knowledge of SBA, WHEDA and USDA lending and related services.
    5. Extensive knowledge of laws and regulations that govern lending.
    6. Demonstrated ability to provide support and direction to others.
    7. A high level of initiative, thoroughness, accuracy and organizations skills required.
    8. Professional, well developed interpersonal and communication skills essential for interacting with credit union staff and members.
    9. In-depth mathematical skills required (calculations and concepts involving decimals, percentages, fractions, dividend, interest, payoff and equity calculations etc).
    10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and intermediate knowledge of Excel.
