Employment Specialist
I. General Responsibilities a. To be responsible to and perform those duties assigned by the Executive Director,
Program Director, or Community Employment Coordinator, operating with professionalism, respect, positivity, and productivity in mind at all times. b. Seek and pursue employment opportunities (work procurement) for both facility-based work and community-based work by assessing service recipients’ wants and needs for employment. c. Generate leads for work and for new products and/or services. d. Represent the Stevens County D.A.C. both at the D.A.C. and in the community. e. Work with leadership to identify and implement marketing strategies to increase community employment outcomes for persons served. f. Analyze needs of employers and communicate ideas to promote services and individuals in the job market. g. Help coordinate service recipient transportation to and from their home, the program and/or community employment sites. Operate company vehicles as designated by leadership. h. Become and remain knowledgeable on the latest employment issues facing developmentally/intellectually disabled persons and keep all staff informed on any pertinent changes in legislation and methodology. i. Incorporate innovative techniques to support individuals in their journey toward greater independence. j. Help coordinate service recipient work schedules and remind people as to where they are scheduled. k. Assign service recipients to tasks and/or assist when necessary. l. Assist service recipients with personal needs. m. Work alongside service recipients at their different jobs in center and in the community. n. Report situations concerning service recipient needs or behaviors to the Program Director and Community Employment Coordinator o. Keep employment services staffed according to service recipients’ needs. p. Provide instruction and assistance to staff implementing employment goals. q. Work with leadership to help develop, coordinate, and implement all aspects of employment services.
II. Teaching Responsibilities a. Engage with service recipients, establish a trusting, collaborative relationship directed toward the goal of competitive employment in community settings. Help each service recipient think about long-term employment goals, work history, strengths, and other factors that relate to employment. b. Provide consultation (discovery, job analysis, job matching, customized employment practices), training, and on-going support to help ensure sustained employment for each individual service recipient. c. Work directly with service recipients to teach work skills using classroom instruction, modeling, hand-over-hand instruction, visual prompts, verbal prompts, or whatever method designated by Executive Director or the Program Director.
d. Work directly with service recipients to teach job related soft skills such as work ethic, self-esteem, techniques for self-control, communication, teamwork, professionalism, and other unspoken rules of the workplace. e. Instruct service recipients in workplace safety and the safe use of tools (when appropriate). f. Encourage productivity and explain the relationship between work and earnings. g. Modify the work site for Service Recipients (as approved by the employer, Executive
Director, Program Director, or Community Employment Coordinator) to allow for better body mechanics and ease of performance. h. Oversee the work performed by the Service Recipients, Program Assistants, and Job
Coaches to ensure that they are performing their duties in a manner that meets/exceeds business expectation. i. Intervene before small conflicts become crisis situations.
III. Record Keeping a. Implement all Department of Labor laws specific to day and employment programs serving individuals with disabilities. b. Remain knowledgeable and keep record on all workplace safety laws. c. Work with the Program Director and Community Employment Coordinator to implement individual employment plans, work readiness assessments such as using the Discovery process (strengths, conditions, interest) and report to the Program Director and
Community Employment Coordinator on service recipients’ progress on their person- centered employment goals. d. Maintain detailed records required by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development – Vocational
Rehabilitation Services. e. Establish methods to continually track employers’ satisfaction of work done.
IV. Adhere to the policies and procedures set forth by the DAC Board of Directors and/or the
Executive Director.

1. Education Required: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED, Associate of Arts
Degree, or a Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree is preferred.
2. Must pass a State of Minnesota Department of Human Services background check.
3. Valid class D drivers’ license
4. Computer skills including but not limited to a working knowledge or willingness to learn
Microsoft Office including Microsoft 365 apps.
5. Work Days: Weekdays
6. Hours: 8am-3:45pm, however hours may vary to accommodate service recipient needs.
