Summary:
Boulder Medical Center (BMC) is currently seeking candidates to join our Ophthalmology team as a Contact Lens Technician and Optician! This position will work part-time 20 hours per week.

Day shift schedules are Monday through Friday.
Job Duties:

Evaluates patient needs in accordance with established procedures. Ensures patient had complete eye exam. Takes patient history and discusses lens wear preferences and visual requirements.

Uses slit lamp biomicroscope to evaluate fit.

Performs over refraction to determine required power.

Assists patient in selection of contact lens which conform to the Ophthalmologist’s prescription, and patient’s preferences concerning preferred use, wear schedule and visual requirements.

Modifies rigid contact lenses.

Schedules follow up visits to evaluate patient’s progress and satisfaction with lenses.

Assists patients who are having problems with their contact lenses.

Operates/maintains the Corneal Topographer, making corneal maps for medical, LASIK, and contact lens fitting purposes as needed.

Dispenses lenses to patients and instructs patient in lens maintenance. Initiates follow-up visits.

Provides education to patients regarding the pros and cons of wearing contact lenses. Helps patients to decide which lenses are the best choice for them.
Contact Lens Technician Clerical Duties
-
Orders supplies and materials for contact lens department including keeping fitting kits full and available to be used for trial fittings, checks incoming invoices against orders, allocates costs to physicians, and forwards invoices to Accounting for payment according to established procedures.

Fills contact lens orders for patients. Takes orders in person, by phone, or on voice mail system, orders lenses, checks invoices against orders, prices orders, prepares patient invoice, files insurance where needed, calls patients to notify that the order is ready.

Schedules daily appointments.

Provides information to patients. The “Contact Lens Fairness to Consumers Act” mandates that when a patient orders lenses from an outside supplier that supplier may ask for and receive confirmation of contact lens prescription from us, the prescribing office, by fax or phone. If we do not reply within 8 hours, they are allowed to sell the lenses without our reply.
- The Contact Lens tech is responsible to receive those requests, verify the prescription and reply when needed to the suppliers.

Inputs and maintains contact lens information in BMC’s electronic medical records for access by Ophthalmologists and staff, in addition to keeping paper records for each patient (the contact envelope) that includes past and current exam information, patient’s contact lens history, documentation of appointments (and other patient contact) and record of contact lens orders, both here and by outside suppliers.

Education:

High School Diploma.

Membership in Contact Lens Society of America (CLSA) or National Contact Lens Association (NCLA) certification, desired.
Experience

Previous experience in Ophthalmologist office, preferred.

Previous Contact Lens Technician experience, desired.

Contact Lens fitting and evaluation experience, desired.
Salary Range:

$20.19 - $26.93/hour; depending on experience
