    Position: Secondary Content Specialist

    Reports to: Executive Director of Secondary Education

    Terms of Employment: 11 months

    Pay Range: $4,217.27 - $7,789.68 monthly

    FLSA Status: Exempt


    Nature of Work


    Under general supervision, performs a variety of administrative tasks in coordinating the successful implementation of the instructional programs in the Craven County school system. Employee is responsible for interpreting changes to the North Carolina Curriculum, informing teachers and principals of the implications of those changes, and ensuring that instruction is aligned with curriculum goals. Employee coaches teachers with developing strategies and techniques for assessing and and increasing student achievement. Employee also assists teachers with textbook and other materials selection and provides teachers various tools to aid instruction. Employee assists administrators with evaluating the effectiveness of instructional programs in the school system and develops strategies for improvement. Serves as a stable resource of instructional programs, resources, progress monitoring, and professional development throughout the district. Reports to the appropriate supervisor.


    Performance Responsibilities/Essential Functions

    • Coordinate the district programs, ensuring that federal, state, and district requirements are met.
    • Research, develop, or coordinate unified curricular programs as required.
    • Collaborate in the selection and distribution of textbooks and instructional
    • Develop pacing guides and other support materials necessary to the programs,
    • Maintain an awareness of current research and curricular trends and disseminate information to applicable personnel throughout the district.
    • Participate in cooperative long-range planning with other departments and schools to make the most effective use of resources.
    • Plan and implement professional development opportunities that address both current research and future instructional needs.
    • Ensure teachers and principals are familiar with any changes to the North Carolina curriculum regarding the appropriate area; design curriculum, new course offerings and guidelines for student placement.
    • Assist with the development of district assessment tools.
    • Use appropriate techniques and strategies that promote and enhance critical, creating, and evaluative thinking with students through modeling lessons in classrooms (where/as needed).
    • Provide teachers with effective instructional strategies and materials reflecting each student’s culture, learning style, special needs, and socioeconomic background (where/as needed).
    • Locate additional resources and assist in the development of grants as available and appropriate.
    • Serve as a liaison to outside agencies in order to articulate the mission of the district, seek additional resources, and administer guidelines.
    • Provide support to classroom teachers and administrators.
    • Coach and mentor colleagues.
    • Collaborate with other content specialists to provide an integrated program.
    • Advise the principal and school based coaches in making data based decisions about instruction to improve student outcomes through analyzing assessment data.
    • Continue learning best practices in instructional strategies and intervention.
    • Plan and implement professional development opportunities that address both current research and future instructional needs.
    • Travel between schools as needed.
    • Fulfill the terms of an affected written contract and adhere to the Code of Ethics for NC Educators.
    • Assist in the enforcement of all federal, state, and district regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Maintain a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers.
    • Work positively and collaboratively toward meeting identified district and school improvement goals.
    • Recommend curricular adjustments to meet the learning needs according to district and/or school trends.
    • Provide outstanding customer service and use positive interpersonal communications skills.
    • Make all decisions and perform all tasks in accordance with Craven County Schools policies and procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with Board rules and applicable federal laws and regulations.
    • Perform other duties as assigned commensurate with the skills and abilities of the position.


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Possess communication skills of listening, oral communication and oral presentation; interpersonal skills and abilities; extensive knowledge of teaching techniques, curriculum, and professional development. Skilled in facilitating teams supporting results-oriented goals. Demonstrated knowledge of standards aligned instruction. Ability to present to adult audiences. Ability to collect and analyze data from a variety of sources. Must have strong work standards for self and others.


    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s Degree in the appropriate area of education
    • Must be certified to teaching in the state of North Carolina and hold a current teachers license
    • Five years of classroom experience required
    • Master’s Degree from an accredited educational institution preferred
    • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License


    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

    Light work: Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
