Founded in 1865, Bowie State University is the oldest Historically Black College/University in Maryland and one of the ten oldest in the country. Bowie State University is a part of the University System of Maryland and is in the midst of one of the nation’s most exciting metropolitan areas, within an easy reach of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
With oversight from the Office of the Provost, the Director of Continuing Education and External Programs will provide leadership, critical program management and administrative services to students and faculty at Bowie State University. The Director will be responsible for promoting increased growth through improved performances of existing programs and development of new programs aligned to the vision of quality management that ensures a rigorous and beneficial learning environment for students and faculty while controlling operating cost and consistent branding and messaging aligned with Bowie State University’s mission, vision and values.
Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director of Continuing Education and External Programs will execute the following responsibilities:
- Direct a strong summer college program to meet undergraduate and graduate program needs.
- Assess and refine programs through continuous improvement processes. Interface with students and faculty and communicate with federal, state, national and international agencies and companies to respond to the needs of course programs.
- Plan annual budgets with coordinators that support courses and programs offered while generating substantial revenue. Manage fiscal and human resources to meet revenue targets and generate new revenue. The Continuing Education (CE) program is primarily a revenues-based function with responsibility for an income budget of at least $300,000.00.
- Recruit, select, and orient CE instructors and ensure that credentials meet all necessary agency requirements.
- Coordinate fee payments by students via academy systems and accurate accounting of the same.
- Supervise the CE program manager, clerical staff, and other professionals within the program.
- Provide leadership for the CE credit and non-credit academic professional development and training programs within the Continuing Education and External Programs.
- Work with the University Relations and Marketing office, and the department of Communications to develop and implement annual publicity and marketing plans for the production of class schedules, brochures, WEB pages, social media, news releases and advertisements.
- Identify strategic opportunities to respond to regional learning needs in Business, Government, Organization and Communities. Develop and market programs to meet these needs in collaboration with BSU’S academic programs.
- Coordinate activities and or programs to facilitate graduation of near-completer students.
- Work with various constituents across the University as well as US Military and Industry contacts to develop CE opportunities aligned with various disciplines and needs.
- Coordinate the preparation and dissemination of the annual and semester CE schedules.
- Manage the CE enrollment data.
- Serve on various committees as needed. Organize and co-chair application review committees.
- Participate in local and national conferences and workshops related to CE programs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
