    Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    • Supervises all areas of food production and service including food preparation, nourishment, tray delivery and retrieval.
    • Takes corrective action for any problems that might arise on the floors pertaining to food service.
    • Receives and inspects deliveries and requisitions all supplies needed in all food service areas.
    • Prepares performance ratings/competencies for all employees under their direct supervision.
    • Discusses work performance and problems with employees, monitors tardiness and attendance, provides guidance, and makes necessary adjustments in assignments when necessary.
    • Carries out the responsibilities of the position within general instructions, standard procedures, and established policies.
    • Ensures subordinates complete the tasks to which they are assigned and explains work requirements to meet food service schedules.
    • Establishes priorities for daily operations in the event of emergency situations; defines the standards of quality and quantity to be met.
    • Serves as a member of the in-service training team by providing individual and/or group instruction for employees.
    • Provides guidance and assistance for lower grade employees in making decision when assembling patient trays and utilizing correct foods to be served on modified diets.
    • Maintains inventory of food service supplies and equipment
    • Conducts quality assurance monitors and sanitation reviews.
    • Supervises the delivery and retrieval of patient trays which includes interacting with members of the multidisciplinary team.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.



    Work Schedule: 5am-1:30pm, 6am-2:30pm, 8am-4:30pm, 10:30am-7pm with rotating weekends and holidays

    Physical Requirements: Employee may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. Employee also may be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment; and frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
    Work Environment: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dish washing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.     Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

    This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive through [9/21/2024]. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.

    Pursuant to VHA Directive 1193.01, VHA health care personnel (HCP) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 subject to such accommodations as required by law (i.e., medical, religious or pregnancy). VHA HCPs do not include remote workers who only infrequently enter VHA locations.
