Copy Editor - Web jobs in Saint Louis, MO

The Diocese of Belleville is seeking a Copy Editor for the diocesan newspaper, The Messenger. This is a 12 - 14 hour per week position with the potential of a hybrid work schedule. The Messenger delivers local, regional, and national Catholic news within the southern 28 counties of Illinois. The newspaper is delivered bi-weekly to approximately 5,000 paid subscribers by mail. The Copy Editor proofreads articles, corrects grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, and fact-checks stories along with changes text to improve flow and comprehension for the reader. The Copy Editor places columns and obituaries on the page and could be responsible for writing headlines and articles.

The successful candidate will hold an associate degree in journalism, communications or English, with a bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience; and 1-3 years’ experience in a related role with newspaper experience preferred. Ability to provide copy editing and proofreading to the highest standard under tight deadlines and acute attention to detail and accuracy. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, but also part of a team. Candidate will have knowledge of desktop publishing skills with Adobe programs, specifically InDesign, and Microsoft Office. The Messenger operates on dual platforms so a knowledge of both Macintosh and PC computers is necessary, as well as knowledge of website design, and other computer programs/applications. Practicing Catholic required with thorough knowledge and understanding of Catholic teachings, practices, and organizational structure.
