  • About Kadince

Kadince (pronounced cadence) is a fully remote (must live in the USA) software company founded in 2013. In a nutshell, we build tools to help financial institutions track and manage their community involvement, marketing compliance, CRA, and complaints. We also build tools to help them prepare for certain audits and regulatory exams.

Kadince has been profitable for many years (we’re fans of making more than we spend). We’re bootstrapped, which means we don’t have investors. So our two owners answer to no one. And they aren’t just giving us commands from their tropical vacation homes waiting to cash their next check. They’re fellow team members and in the trenches with us.

    Why We’re Hiring

After our team members, our customers are our most important focus. Since we operate in a niche space, our customers have very specific needs and challenges that we aren’t always aware of. We want our software to be the best community involvement and regulatory software on the market, and we need a director of compliance to help us get there.

    Who We Want to Hire

We’d love to hire someone who has worked in a bank compliance role. Ideally, you’ll have experience with several different regulations, such as the CRA, Reg B (ECOA), and Reg C (HMDA). You’ll also have experience with Fair Lending, marketing compliance (e.g., UDAP, Reg DD, UDAAP, etc.), third-party risk, and complaint management. We understand that you likely won’t be an expert in all of these areas yet, and that’s okay. But you need to be one of those strange people who are passionate about rules and reading very boring texts (1,500 pages should be nothing to you). We know that makes this role sound very unappealing, but we also know you’re out there.

Our software serves compliance and risk professionals, and having someone who is an expert in these domains and is able to speak the language will be a great asset to the team. You don’t have to be a former Kadince user, but that experience will certainly help.

You’ll be involved in product development and determining what our software is missing and how it can add more value to our customers. So you should be excited to learn the ins and outs of our software, and you should never hesitate to brainstorm and make suggestions. We want someone with big ideas who isn’t afraid to fight for them.

You should have a desire to continually learn and improve your knowledge of the regulations, even outside of our current offerings. Maybe there’s an opportunity we haven’t explored that can add value to our customers. We love giving team members opportunities to improve their skills, whether through online courses, workshops, conferences, or learning from others.

Our vision, mission, and core values should resonate with you. That’ll be crucial to your success and happiness if you join the Kadince team.

    Our Vision and Mission

Our vision and mission aren’t something we hung on the office wall and forgot about. Seriously, we don’t have an office, let alone a wall to hang them on. But our vision, mission, and core values sit on the desks of each of our team members. And we discuss them regularly in our meetings. Your goals and KPI (key performance indicator) will be developed to ensure you’re working to help us achieve our vision and mission.

Our vision and mission are what get us up each morning. They, in addition to our core values, help us make decisions.

Vision - Setting the standard for operating a great software company.

We’re big fans of author Jim Collins and his best-selling book, Good to Great (bonus points if you’ve read it). While there are lots of good software companies out there, we want to be one of the great ones.

The first word of our vision is also significant. To go “high school English class” on you, the present participle “setting” illustrates that we’re not looking to set the standard and then be done, but that the standard is always moving and we’re always chasing it. We continually stop to recognize the awesome things we’ve done and then look for ways to do them even better.

Mission - Building the best community involvement software for financial institutions. (We plan to update our mission statement soon to reflect our changing software. Stay tuned.)

As Jim Collins taught in his Hedgehog Concept (told you we think he’s great—pun intended), great companies need to determine what they can be the best at in the world and focus on that. There are so many things we could solve as a software company, but we’ve found what we think we can be the best in the world at and we stick to it every day.

    Our Core Values

Our core values remind us who we are. They also guide us in the decisions we make. They’re listed in order of importance. If we have a question when making a decision about people, for example, we look to the core value above it to make our decision.

    1. Integrity - We’re honest with ourselves and others.
    2. People - We understand that people are the foundation of Kadince and we act accordingly.
    3. Care - We love what we do and do it consistently and intentionally to the best of our abilities.
    4. Remarkability - We provide remarkable experiences to all who come into contact with Kadince.
    5. Growth - We accept yesterday and improve today.

What a Day in the Life of the Director of Compliance Might Look Like

You start your day with a brief development meeting. You touch base with the team and answer some regulatory questions they have. Getting this scoop will help developers see the big picture and understand the why behind the new Kadince feature they’re developing.

Then you sit in on a sales demo or customer training call. This allows you to see firsthand how Kadince is perceived and where we can improve. Your observations from these interactions are crucial for refining our solutions and aligning them more closely with customers’ needs.

Next, you meet with Jaidyn, the company’s writer, to review a blog article she wrote. The article is heavily focused on the new CRA rule, and she doesn’t know all the ins and outs as well as you do. She appreciates your feedback, and her article is much better now that you’ve clarified some key points.

Now it’s time to work on an internal team presentation. You’ve been asked to teach the entire Kadince team about marketing compliance, and the training is scheduled during next week’s all-team meeting. You put together a slide show, ensuring that everything is easy to understand and clearly relates back to the software.

For lunch, you meet a friend at a nearby cafe. It’s nice to catch up after so long, and you’re glad you have the freedom to take a break and not worry about the time. Eventually, your friend has to hurry back to work. You’re in no rush, so you stop by the grocery store to pick up a few ingredients for dinner tonight. You’re trying something new, and some of those ingredients are difficult to find. But you manage!

Back at work, you meet with Scott, the Director of Product. He has some new feature ideas he wants to run past you, and you have a few of your own. He thinks they’ll really resonate with compliance and risk professionals, but you know more about their needs than he does. You think the new feature ideas are great, and the two of you come up with a plan of action. You’re sure customers will be thrilled when they hear the news.

It’s time for an industry webinar! One of the foremost compliance experts in the industry is hosting a webinar, and you’re excited to watch and learn. You don’t worry too much about taking copious notes, since Kadince uses Otter software to transcribe meetings. You can always go back and continue learning. You learn something new, and you’re excited to work it into your team presentation. But that can wait until tomorrow.

At the end of your work day, you wrap up some little tasks. You take a look at your calendar for tomorrow and make sure everything is ready to go. You close your laptop but keep your phone handy in case someone has a quick question. Nobody does, and you enjoy the evening with your family. That new dish you cooked was a hit, and you can’t wait to put a picture in the “just for fun” company Slack channel.

When and Where You’d Work and What You’d Work On

Kadince is a principle-based company, which means we focus on principles, not policies. Since we’re a fully remote company, you’ll speak with Bart Liechty, your leader, to determine when and where you’ll work. You’ll also work with Bart each week, month, quarter, and year to determine your goals and KPI (key performance indicator) and what you’ll work on.

The principle is to work when and where you want as long as you meet or exceed your goals and KPI. This may mean planning your day around team meetings or working a longer day because you’ll be out of the office for the next week or because you took that long lunch with your friend. Overall, your schedule needs to help you achieve our vision and mission and demonstrate our core values.

At Kadince, work won’t tie you down to one location. You’ll be free to travel or relocate as you get the itch to try somewhere new. Want to spend a month abroad, working from a hotel and exploring the rest of the time? Go ahead. Just make sure that wherever you plan to work has a reliable and fast internet connection (as if you would go anywhere without it anyway). And turn on the blurry filter during video calls so we don’t get jealous. One of our teammates recently had zebras running around in the background of a video call during a team meeting. Come to find out he was working from the deck of his hotel at the Animal Kingdom in Disney World. Even though we were jealous, we thought it was pretty cool.

    Who You’d Be Working With

We have over 40 team members (which makes us really happy since Kadince was started by two people in their basements). If hired, you’ll probably work with each team member in one way or another. Some of the people you’ll work with most frequently are:

Jared is the CEO of Kadince. Before starting a software company, Jared was a bank marketer. Jared spends a lot of his time thinking of ways to improve the things we do here at Kadince (in fact, he calls it an obsession of his). Jared knows that work is a necessary evil and believes that we might as well enjoy it, which is why he does everything he can to make Kadince the best place to work in the world (and it is!). He loves to mountain bike, fly fish, ski, train dogs, and more. He even has an adorable “office dog” he’s training to become a therapy dog that makes occasional Zoom appearances (ruff).

Scott is our Director of Product, which means he helps decide what new features we should develop based on customer and team feedback. He’s been at Kadince longer than almost anyone. He has a head full of random facts and loves to share them with his teammates. Scott has had over 25 jobs, which makes him sound a lot older than he is! He’s mostly worked in construction, but he once had a job as an algae harvester (what even is that?). He may not know how to swim, but that doesn’t stop him from “diving” right into each new project.

Bart, our Chief Operating Officer, loves to go mountain biking, trail running, and skiing (seriously, he’s always doing something outside). He loves to beat his past records and continuously improve. Bart is a big fan of baseball and only has five more Major League Baseball stadiums to go before he’s hit them all. Bart has had several different job experiences, including pooper scooper at a cattle auction and KFC head cook.

    Benefits

Since we’re a remote company, we don’t offer office snacks and ping pong tables (or any of those other benefits that never get used). But if you’re a fan of “core benefits” that bring great rewards and peace of mind, you’ll like what we have to offer. Competitive pay, 401(k) matching, generous paid leave, insurance (medical, dental, vision, life, short-term disability), a flex spending account, and profit sharing. Yeah, it’s pretty great...

And we love to spoil our team. We celebrate big events with you, like birthdays and work anniversaries, so you can expect some pretty fun gifts. This year we’re giving every team member the last week of the year off (we like to spread holiday cheer).

Every year, we go on a super fun retreat as a team. This isn’t your typical conference room and endless meetings shindig—we try to avoid meetings as much as possible. We spend a week getting to know each other and doing fun activities in a cool place. This year we’ll be at a resort in St. George, Utah (have you seen High School Musical 2?).

    How to Apply

Applicants who stand out are those who are interested in joining the Kadince team, not just applying for as many positions as possible or trying to keep unemployment benefits. We’ve seen it all. No kidding, we once had someone ask us in an interview what the name of our company is. Needless to say, we could tell that person wasn’t really passionate about joining our team.

When applying to Kadince, please send us PDFs of your resume and cover letter. The cover letter is your opportunity to tell us why you would be a great fit for the position, but should be no longer than 300 words. Take advantage of this time. Seriously, sell yourself!

Thank you for your interest in Kadince. We look forward to reviewing your application.
