    Job Duties

    This position as a Sex offender Unit Compliance Officer (SOIU) assists the efforts of law-enforcement agencies and others to protect their communities and families from repeat sex offenders. It also protects children from becoming victims of criminal offenders by helping to prevent such individuals from being allowed to work directly with children. Additionally, this compliance officer position is responsible for properly registering sex offenders, educating sex offenders, verifying sex offenders, and when a violation of law has occurred, referring the matter to a Trooper for investigation.

    This position is responsible for the counties of Albemarle, Greene and Nelson and the City of Charlottesville.

    •Conducts and completes assigned home and employment verifications as required.
    •Updates the Sex Offender Verification System.
    •Promptly notifies sworn FSOIU personnel of any identified violations with sex offender registry laws.
    •Plans, organizes, and coordinates assignments.
    •Files required reports and forms within established deadlines, which are accurate, legible, and contain required information.
    •Effectively expresses ideas orally or in writing as required to perform the job.
    •Submits all completed SOR forms to the registry within specified time frames.
    •Makes and maintains appropriate community-based contacts, consistent with supervisory instructions including Probation and Parole, local law enforcement, and correctional institutions.
    •Provides training as necessary to Department and outside agencies.
    •Performs other tasks assigned by supervision to meet organizational requirements resulting in a functional unit.
    •Presents cases in court in a professional manner.
    •Provides testimony in accordance with training, laws, policies, and procedures.
    •Promotes good public relations.
    •Strives to promote a cooperative work environment with other agencies and provide agency assists as needed.
    •Increases public awareness by presentation or participation in public awareness projects.
    •Effective working relationships are established with supervisors, co-workers, clients, and/or customers.
    •Maintains all issued items in satisfactory condition.
    •Demonstrates ability to operate and maintain these items appropriately as trained.
    •Maintains personal appearance as defined by Weight Control Policy.
    •Successfully completes all required re-certifications.
    •Attendance and punctuality are performed at the expected level.
    •Ensures proper safety practices are followed.
    •Annually completes cardholder training on proper card usage, security, and procurement guidelines, electronically, within the Department of Human Resource Management's Learning Center.
    •Compliance as required by Executive Order Number Thirty-Five (2019).

    Minimum Qualifications

    •Willingness to learn and demonstrate understanding of the registration requirements of convicted sex offenders in Virginia.
    •Knowledge of judicial proceedings, case management, and the parole process.
    •Skill in operating a computer to include Microsoft software applications.
    •Demonstrated skill to operate a motor vehicle.
    •Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in English; to maintain harmonious working relationship with supervisors and the public; to make decisions independently by applying policies, rules, and regulations; to work independently, follow instructions, and pay close attention to details; and to identify community resources.
    •Valid Virginia Operator's License.
    •High School or GED equivalent.
    •Progressively responsible law enforcement experience or any combination of training and experience indicating possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
    •Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified, which requires either United States (U.S.) citizenship or having been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. and eligible for naturalization.

    Compliance Officers assigned to the Firearms and Sex Offender Investigative Unit (FSOIU) shall be assigned to a specific region and duty post by special order. Compliance Officer's residence shall be located within the assigned duty post or within 45 minutes from any border of their duty post boundary.
