Establishes and maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations and community leaders to ensure effective collaboration and support of giving initiatives.     Position Title:               Associate Director of Major Giving

    Accountable To:           Director of Philanthropy & Events

     

    Purpose Summary:

    The Associate Director of Major Giving is accountable for the development, planning, and implementation of fundraising strategies for Major Giving at PAWS. At PAWS, Major Giving encompasses giving to the annual fund, fundraising campaigns, and special events by donors who are in an actively managed portfolio, gifts of non-cash assets, and planned giving.

     

    The Associate Director of Major Giving will also cultivate and grow relationships with current and prospective major donors and solicit gifts to support the annual fund, special events, and capital campaign fundraising goals. The Associate Director has managerial responsibility and supervises the Major Gifts Officer.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    In accordance with organizational policies, duties include but are not limited to:

    Strategy and Leadership

    • Work closely with the Director of Philanthropy & Events to set annual goals (both financial and non-financial) for Major Giving.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual plan for Major Giving to meet stated goals.
    • Develop and monitor revenue and expense budgets for Major Giving.
    • Coordinate with the fundraising leadership team (the department Director, Associate Director of Philanthropy, and Associate Director of Events) to ensure fundraising programs, activities, and goals are in alignment.
    • Support the department Director in coordinating the participation of PAWS leadership team, Board of Directors, leadership volunteers, and staff in major gift fundraising activities.
    • Manage and coordinate major donor engagement opportunities such as tours of PAWS and wildlife releases.
    • Build and maintain relationships across the organization to stay informed about PAWS programs and funding needs and bring content to donors that enriches their giving experience.
    • Make recommendations for improvements to systems and practices and coordinate with team members to implement changes. 
    • Oversee and guide the work of the Major Gifts Officer and conduct annual performance evaluations.
    • Develop and implement strategies for a growing Planned Giving program, including oversight of estate tracking, the creation of marketing plans, and management of the PAWS’ Legacy Society.

     

    Frontline Fundraising

    • Manage a portfolio of 80 to 100 assigned major gift prospects and identify, cultivate, upgrade, solicit, and steward major gift prospects in support of PAWS’ life-saving work.
    • Meet monthly activity goals, averaging 10 substantive contacts with assigned prospects each month.
    • Maintain major donor information and tracking systems using Raiser’s Edge donor database and files.
    • Take a lead role in audience development and major gift solicitation strategy for PAWS events, especially PAWS Wild Night.
    • Oversee the Table Captain program for PAWS Wild Night and support Table Captains in identifying and engaging guests.

     

    Other Responsibilities include:

    • Creates summary reports and analyzes trends in the major gifts program.
    • Participates in the conceptual design, writing, and production of proposals, informational materials, gift agreements, and other materials needed to secure major gifts.
    • May perform other duties as assigned.

     

    Controls Over Work

    The Associate Director of Major Giving works under the general guidance of the Director of Philanthropy and Events but will frequently work directly and collaboratively with other staff as appropriate and is expected to pursue the established duties without direct supervision.  

     

    Physical Requirements:

    The work may require occasional long periods of sitting at a desk while using a computer, calculator, or other office equipment. Work is performed both in and out of the PAWS facilities, which may require lifting and carrying equipment and display materials. Local, and some regional, travel will be required. 

    Qualifications


    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business management or a closely related field OR equivalent education and experience. 
    • Minimum five years of progressively responsible and successful fund development experience, with an emphasis on cultivating and securing major gifts (gifts of $10,000 or more).
    • Minimum two years of management or leadership experience preferred.
    • Fundraising experience in the animal welfare or environmental fields, and general knowledge of gift planning vehicles and capital campaigns is desirable.
    • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington driver’s license with no record of major or repeated minor traffic offenses and auto-insurance with required coverage limits.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Excellent verbal and writing skills, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team to serve as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic ambassador for PAWS and work with a diverse group of people.
    • Strong organizational and administrative skills. Highly collaborative, proactive, and flexible.
    • Must show initiative, forward-thinking, and be self-motivated.
    • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with donor database software and tracking systems.
    • Proficiency in the use of donor management software required; experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred.
    • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and have a tactful, mature, and sincere attitude.
    • Ability to work with clearly defined goals, and plan and organize efforts to achieve objectives.
    • A sincere interest and belief in the philosophy of animal welfare.
