Correctional Officer, Sr. enforces rules and regulations in a prison, jail or other holding facility. Presides over prisoners awaiting trial or those who have been convicted of a crime. Being a Correctional Officer, Sr. oversees prisoner conduct and safety. Supervises prisoners during meals, recreation, work and other daily activities. Additionally, Correctional Officer, Sr. documents violations and takes appropriate disciplinary actions. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires Firearms Certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Correctional Officer, Sr. works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. As a South Dakota Dept of Corrections Correctional Officer, you will work 12-hour shifts (2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on 2 days off, 2 days on, 3 days off), maintaining custody of women in the Women's Prison by enforcing institutional operations memoranda and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the inmates and employees, as well as maintaining confinement conditions.

    • You will be assigned a specific post such as a control room, cell hall, visit room, or recreational area. Common duties in most posts include observing inmates in cell halls, recreation areas, dining halls, school, health services and shower rooms;
    • supervising inmates by assigning duties and monitoring work; preparing reports of incidents and rule infractions; conducting inmate counts and maintaining log books;
    • escorting and transporting inmates to and from inside and outside appointments; inspecting and searching cells, common areas, inmates and visitors;

    monitoring and controlling gates and cell doors; and responding to crisis situations.

    To Qualify :

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Possess a current, valid driver’s license
    • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or be able to prove permanent U.S. residency
    • Must pass an on-line Correctional Officer suitability assessment
    • You will be required to undergo a background investigation. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.
    • Should be confident, assertive, independent, motivated, and act with integrity
