    Job Summary:

    • The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) is seeking an experienced Director of Cost Accounting, which is part of our dynamic Data and Analytics team, Penn DnA. The Director of Cost Accounting provides leadership for the cost accounting function at UPHS as well as ad hoc analyses and information in support of financial operations. The Director will oversee a team of 3-8 cost account staff and will report to the VP of Strategic Decision Support.

    • This position is open to remote candidates. The incumbent will be expected to travel periodically to UPHS sites. 

    Key Responsibilities: 

    Oversight of Cost Accounting and Net Revenue Rules: 
    • Oversee cost accounting and net revenue rules for Penn Medicine entities (all Hospitals, Physicians Organizations, Penn Medicine at Home etc.) to ensure accurate, complete, and timely financial reports. Specific responsibilities include: 
    1. Maintain and improve business rules needed for financial systems. 
    2. Ensure timely and accurate monthly integration of data.
    3. Validate cost allocations and net revenue rule administrations and loads.
    4. Ensure cost accounting and net revenue rules remains consistent with industry standards.
    5. Recommend and implement improvements in costing and net revenue methodologies.
    6. Ensure consistency of costing and net revenue methodologies across Penn Medicine.
    Team Leadership: 
    • Lead, mentor, and manage a team to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the cost accounting function. Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the team, encouraging continuous learning and development. 
    Integration of Accounting Systems: 
    • Work with Penn Medicine entities, as needed, to migrate their cost accounting systems to a common platform and methodology. Investigate differences, determine the pros and cons of different approaches, recommend a standard, and then lead the migration. 
    Continuous Improvement: 
    • Identify and realize opportunities to improve cost accounting methodologies, for example, to achieve greater efficiency and scale or in response to changing payment models. Support individual entities’ financial reporting teams, as needed, and identify opportunities to scale best practices.  
    Ad Hoc Analyses: 
    • Provide ad hoc analyses (e.g. economic analyses or programs and procedures, ROI analyses, detailed analyses of costs) and information in support of financial operations, offering insights that contribute to process improvements and strategic decision-making. 
    Data Infrastructure: 
    • Support the maintenance and improvement of the cost accounting data infrastructure, ensuring data integrity and reliability. Implement enhancements to streamline processes and improve efficiency in data collection and reporting. 

    Qualifications: 

    • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience in cost accounting (Required) 
    • Master’s degree in business, public health, or health administration and 8 years of experience in cost accounting (Preferred)
    • Certified Public Accountant (Preferred) 

    Skills & Abilities:

    • Proven experience with health care cost accounting, net revenue rule administration and decision support software.
    • Motivated, high-energy individual; anticipates and removes roadblocks to meet deadlines and deliver work products efficiently.
    • Strong project management skills and the ability to ‘manage up’ effectively and gracefully; ability to drive multiple projects with overlapping timeframes.
    • Collaborates effectively with a range of business, clinical, and academic leaders.
    • Results oriented; able to move projects forward in a setting of distributed accountability.
    • Demonstrated success in leading teams, fostering a positive work culture, coaching skill development, and mentoring talent.
    • Experience in the healthcare industry, ideally with a strong understanding of clinical care delivery, provider financials, and major industry trends impacting health care providers.
