Court Reporter documents court proceedings by using a stenotype machine. May require completion of a 2-4 year training program at a vocational school. Being a Court Reporter has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Additionally, Court Reporter works under immediate supervision. Through the use of a steno machine, takes down all spoken words during court proceedings including but not limited to testimony, opening/closing remarks of counsel and the Court including orders and sidebar conferences. Transcribe court orders and/or transcripts from the verbatim notes in a timely manner. Swear in witnesses, mark exhibits as directed by the Court and maintain all records and notes of testimony.
1. Maintain Steno machine. Notify Court Administration of any maintenance or repairs needed on machine.
2. Maintain all notes of testimony and exhibits keeping a daily log of all proceedings. Backup all work for proper retention of records under the State guidelines.
3. Transcribes testimony of court proceedings including trials, hearings, orders, conferences or any other court related event as directed by Court Administration or the Court.
4. Interrupts when necessary to ensure accuracy and completeness of the record; reads back portions of proceedings if requested.
5. Maintains a log of all parties, attorneys and persons at court events noting all occurrences such as unusual terms, names, objections, examination of witnesses and orders entered.
6. Must get correct spelling of names, terminology or any other specific details or testimony that are part of the proceedings.
7. Process transcript requests and make copies of log notes and recordings as directed; transcribes the record only as directed. Transcripts must be completed per Civil Rule 4011.
8. Maintains record of transcript requests; status of request up to and including filing in the appropriate filing office and service to party(s).
9. Generates Court orders as directed arising out of any Court proceeding.
10. Performs other job-related duties as assigned including but not limited to answering phones, making copies, responding to inquiries and requests of Court records, scanning/emailing upon request.
Assist other Court Reporters, Court Recorders and Court Staff as needed
