Sr. Underwriter - Commercial Lending

  • PRIMARY PURPOSE:


    The Sr. Underwriter will report to the VP, Commercial Lending and play a crucial role in evaluating financial risks and ensuring adherence to sound credit practice. This position requires proven strength in underwriting Commercial Real Estate loan portfolios to include the primary asset types such as retail, industrial, multi-family, medical office, and self-storage and must possess strong cross-functional collaboration with peers, management, and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate is an expert in performing detailed analyses of creditworthiness, financial profiles, and credit risk levels and plays a significant role to the commercial real estate lending team culture to ensure it is consistent with the mission, vision, and values of CBC Credit Union.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    • Performs accurate financial analyses of commercial real estate transactions: subject property, personal and global cash flow analysis, financial statement analysis, client evaluation, detailed collateral analysis, risk rating, and industry/competitor analysis for credit decision.
    • Works closely with VP of Commercial Lending, AVP Director of Credit, Legal, Business Services Operations, Credit Risk / Compliance and other relevant departments.
    • Communicates and manages the underwriting function in a timely and collaborative manner and within established guidelines and expectations.
    • Exercise good judgment, conduct reasonableness tests, and issue quality decisions. Determine accuracy and completeness of files; ensures processes are consistent. Maintain a sound knowledge of secondary market activity, practices, and business/industry practices as they impact underwriting quality and origination activity. Maintain previously established service level standard of decisions within a service level time frame set by the credit union.
    • Develop and maintain an up to date and sound knowledge of multiple loan product guidelines offered by the credit union, AUS guidelines, and risk assessment tools that are used for mortgage loans decisions.
    • Rework loans to new terms, identify additional conditions as needed to insure a viable credit decision.
    • Reviews professional commercial real estate appraisals and associated third party reviews.
    • Reviews professional environmental reports and assesses environmental risk.
    • Analyzes commercial leases and/or rent rolls.
    • Assists with satisfying loan closing requirements.
    • During the underwriting process, ensure all underwriting adheres to internal credit policies and procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
    • Delivers Credit Approval Memo: financial modeling, loan structure, industry, economic, and other analysis to management to support the loan decision-making process.
    • Ensures regular communication through the origination process with management and team members.
    • Performs Periodic Loan Review and portfolio management underwriting.
    • Proficient in Cash CRE and Insight.
    • Generate, support, and develop existing and new policies, procedures, and products.
    • Works together with team members to accomplish monthly, quarterly and annual goals.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required of an individual to satisfactorily perform the essential duties of this job.


    • Minimum of 7 years of commercial real estate underwriting / credit risk analysis.
    • Must have a solid understanding of financial statements, proficiency in financial modeling, and strong analytical skills.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; team player.
    • Self-motivated with high energy levels; ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively.
    • Proficient in conducting credit analysis, including cash flow, credit reporting and credit investigation.
    • Consistently and quickly deliver high quality work.
    • Consistently work well with others in support of department and organizational goals and member needs.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to compose a professional business letter or email.
    • Excellent computer skills, including:
    • Proficient in MS Office products, internet research and various other online applications
    • Ability to create basic formulas and calculations in an Excel spreadsheet
    • Adept with most current technology and software to approve loans.
    • Possess strong organizational skills with great attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Strong work ethic.

    § Knowledge of BSA/AML/OFAC regulations as they apply to this role. Must complete annual required training and ensure their team adheres to all regulatory requirements including annual and role specific training.


    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business Management, Accounting, or related field. Minimum of seven years of experience in Commercial Real Estate underwriting.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work area is well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. The noise level is moderate.


    WORK SCHEDULE: Onsite in San Diego Required, Workweek will be approximately 40 hours with some overtime as needed. Occasional attendance at meetings before or after scheduled hours may be required. Management reserves the right to change any employee's work schedule to meet the operational needs of the Credit Union. Furthermore, management reserves the right to reassign any employee, either temporarily or permanently, to work at another credit union location.


    TRAVEL: Minimal travel required, less than 5%.
