    Nature of Work

    This is a highly responsible specialized field and administrative position that requires knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police science, administration, and crime investigation for the Guntersville Police Department. The nature of the work involves the application of advanced police skill plus specialized and technical knowledge of criminal investigation. Work involves crime prevention, investigations of a specialized nature, crime scene investigations, and special assignments. Work involves an element of danger and investigators must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgement in accordance with accepted police practices and departmental policies. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Chief Investigator and under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.

    Essential Functions

    • Investigate and resolve reported and assigned incidents and criminal acts involving persons, property, narcotics, and other illegal activities; enforces Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.
    • Assume responsibility of crime scene and collects, analyze, and preserve evidence; documents crime scene using a variety of technical equipment, techniques, and procedures.
    • Interview suspect(s), witnesses, complainants, and victims; gathers, compiles, and verifies information pertinent to the investigation and resolution of a variety of criminal incidents; perform surveillance work; utilizes records databases as well as open source information to further investigate efforts.
    • Tracks, identifies, locates, and interrogates suspects; obtain and executes warrants in cases requiring such; arrest and process suspects; prepare cases for court or jury trial and testifies in court or jury trial as needed or required.
    • Coordinates with other investigators and staff to investigate and solve high profile cases; coordinates investigatory work activities with prosecuting attorneys and other Federal, State, and local agencies; disperses information to staff and updates chain of command on cases.
    • Gathers, investigates, disseminates, and maintains criminal intelligence data; prepare case files; compile reports and summaries of activities, complete necessary and required forms; file and maintain all records and documentation while maintaining strict confidentiality.
    • Perform background investigations on prospective employees.
    • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; supports policer officer staff to expedite police service to citizens as needed; provides basic training to new hires during FTO period.
    • Attends in-service training and technical or professional classes or seminars to maintain required certifications or improve technical or professional skills.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Thorough knowledge of modern police operations, principles, practices, and procedures with the ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations.
    • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to law enforcement; knowledge of department SOG’s, rules, and regulations.
    • Considerable knowledge of modern criminal investigation principles, practices, procedures, and techniques.
    • Considerable knowledge of the admissibility and preservation of evidence.
    • Skill in the operation of computer and applicable software applications.
    • Skill in the operation of assigned police equipment.
    • Skill in the proper use of firearms techniques, safety principles and practices, defense techniques, physical apprehension, criminal investigation methods, and traffic control and parking methods.
    • Ability to enforce law fairly and impartially with tach and courtesy, or firmness if necessary.
    • Ability to observe, analyze, and record situations clearly and objectively with accuracy and a high degree of attention to detail.
    • Ability to efficiently operate a variety of technical equipment such as digital camera, cell phone, and other necessary crime scene equipment.
    • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, outside agencies, general public, and those in contact in the course of work.
    • Ability to communicate and understand the English language; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
    • Ability to perform duties requiring physical endurance and agility frequently under adverse and dangerous conditions.
    • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with regard to surrounding hazards and conditions.
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
    • Ability to exhibit professionalism at all times.
    • Ability to perform all essential job functions.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must possess a State of AL Peace Officers Law Enforcement Certification (APOST) with at least five (5) years of experience in law enforcement with a minimum of three (3) consecutive years at Guntersville Police Department. Supervision experience preferred.
    • Must possess a State of Alabama driver’s license with driving record suitable for insurability.
