  • SUMMARY OF POSITION

    TCOLE certified peace officer who works closely with Office of the County Attorney personnel, various law enforcement agencies, and others for the purpose of preparing, reviewing, building, assembling, filing, and/or disposing of criminal, juvenile, and CPS cases, as well as mental commitments and protective orders.

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

    · : County Attorney, First Assistant County Attorney, Investigator

    · : This is a non-supervisory position

    · : Frequent contact with members of local and state law enforcement agencies, other agency and governmental employees, attorneys, county and district officials and staff, defendants not represented by counsel, victims, and the general public in person and by phone.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:EXAMPLES OF WORK

    • Receives offense reports from various law enforcement agencies;
    • Prepares initial information for case review by County Attorney or Assistant County Attorney;
    • Conducts follow-up investigation on criminal cases when warranted;
    • Collects additional evidence and verifies and/or supplements reports as needed;
    • Interviews witnesses and takes their statements;
    • Assists with assembling and filing approved cases;
    • Serves subpoenas on witnesses, experts, and/or law enforcement officers as requested by County Attorney or Assistant County Attorneys;
    • Drafts correspondence and prepares affidavits in response to subpoenas;
    • Serves warrants as needed;
    • Obtains criminal histories and/or driving records on defendants and on such witnesses/victims as ordered by the Court or otherwise authorized by the County Attorney or Assistant County Attorney;
    • Investigates internal complaints/cases as assigned;
    • Travels within the state to gather evidence as directed by the County Attorney;
    • Calendars and issues warrants on hot checks/prepares hot check information, complaints, and demand letters to check writers and receives payments as needed;
    • Assists with Protective Orders;
    • Provides office and courthouse security as needed;
    • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:

    • Criminal and civil law; Penal Code of Texas; criminal investigation techniques; case management methods; TCIC/NCIC data bases and information; interviewing techniques; gang identification; juvenile law; education laws and updates, arrest and seizure techniques; family violence; child abuse and prevention; cultural diversity; as well as correct business English, spelling, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

    Skills & Abilities:

    • Operate a computer with working knowledge of Odyssey and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and Outlook); proficient keyboarding; operate other standard office equipment including copier, printers, CD/DVD duplicator, calculator, telephone system, etc.; maintain files and records; produce reports; strong proofreading skills and meticulous attention to details for accurate and timely case analysis; good oral and written communication skills; good organizational, time management, and follow-up skills; ability to handle multiple priorities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and others, including the general public; and ability to work well with a diverse group of people

    ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

    1. High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus five to seven years of experience working in the law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & TRAINING REQUIRED

    1. Advanced Peace Officer certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCOLE);

    2. Valid Texas driver’s license;

    3. Annual continuing law enforcement training coursework;

    4. Must be bondable
