CROSSING GUARD

NATURE OF THE WORK
Incumbents in this job class ensure the safety of school children going to or coming from school at
marked street crossings and street intersections.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Guards street crossings and intersections during hours when children are going to or coming from
school; directs actions of children and traffic at street crossings and intersections to ensure safe
crossing; records license number of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and signs and reports
infractions to law enforcement; escorts children across street; places caution signs at designated points
before going on duty and removes signs at end of shift; may stop speeding vehicles and warn drivers;
observes necessary safety precautions; performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of:

Traffic rules and traffic safety;
Public relations.

Ability to:

Use good judgment;
Read and express ideas in English;
Walk children safely across street;
Stand and walk for extended periods of time;
See and hear clearly.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possession of a standard senior high school diploma or GED plus some responsible work experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
None required.
