Curriculum Specialist designs and develops training programs, curriculum, methods, and materials for various audiences, including employees, managers, customers, or other learners. Conducts skill assessments and collects input to identify training or development needs, goals, gaps, and requirements. Being a Curriculum Specialist consults with subject matter experts to define learning objectives and to design appropriate course content and training curriculum. Develops curricula supporting defined competency models or skill frameworks. Additionally, Curriculum Specialist writes and edits outlines, syllabus, lecture notes, and materials for in-person or online courses and self-study programs. Evaluates the software or collaboration tools to be selected for training. Establishes metrics to use to evaluate training effectiveness. May collaborate with vendors that provide training materials or conduct training. May coach trainers. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Curriculum Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending June 30, 2025, with potential for extension, subject to annual funding availability and department business needs.

    Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Religion and Public Life, this role will be part of the ongoing education program for professionals in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors at Religion and Public Life, a part of the Religious Literacy and the Professions Initiative. The specialist will develop curricular material for high school teachers, professional and lifelong learners, and the general public using the RPL method. The person in this role will work in concert with content experts to develop this material. In addition, the Curriculum Specialist will help educators in implementation of the material in their classrooms and maintain an active network of educators. The CS will also be asked to deliver both synchronous and asynchronous training for members of our educational network. This work includes the curation and creation of online content. All material will integrate the RPL method outlined on our website at https://rpl.hds.harvard.edu/what-we-do/our-approach.

    Position Description

    Curriculum Development for RLPI Initiatives

    • Work with content experts to create materials for high school teachers. These materials may include, but are not limited to:
      • Modules for classroom deployment.
      • Teaching guides.
      • Teacher professional development.
    • Develop professional and lifelong learning (PLL) modules with content experts.
    • Create and adapt material for publication on our website for curious publics. These materials may include, but are not limited to:
      • Written texts.
      • Audio and visual resources.

    Network Facilitation

    • Maintain existing network of high school educators.
    • Grow network of high school educators.
    • Catalyze network of topic experts for development of curricular material.
    • Manage advisory boards for different projects.

    Training and Mentorship

    • Train educators, both in-person and online, on religious literacy.
    • Train educators in the use of new materials, both in-person and online.
    • Run workshops for educators, both in-person and online.
    • Develop and maintain online professional development courses for various parts of RPL training.
    • Mentor and manage student workers.
    • Focus on pedagogy through all aspects of RPL.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • A minimum of five years of experience in an education setting required.
    • Candidates wishing to be considered must supply a cover letter in addition to a resume.

    Additional Qualifications and Skills

    • Master’s degree preferred.
    • High school classroom teaching and curriculum development experience preferred.
    • Preference for familiarity with Religious Studies, broadly defined.
    • Preference for familiarity with Religious Literacy.

    Working Conditions

    This position is based in Cambridge, MA and requires an on-campus presence. All HDS positions have a regular schedule of Monday - Friday, 9am - 5 pm. A hybrid schedule, involving some remote work, may be possible, subject to business needs and manager and HR review/approval. HDS may adjust flex schedules as necessary or appropriate. Harvard has an established Flexwork Policy.

    Work Format Details

    This is a hybrid position that is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Work is expected to be performed in an office setting, but may be remote, as directed by HDS. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which are currently Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
